CHISINAU, March 12 (Itar-Tass) — Members of the opposition bloc Democratic Moldova (BDM) on Saturday decided against supporting a presidential candidate from the ruling Communist Party. <\/p>\n

In the March 6 legislative election, the Communist Party received 56 of 101 mandates in the new parliament, which enables it to form the government. However in order to get its presidential candidate elected, the party will have to make a deal with the opposition: either Democratic Moldova that received 34 mandates or the pro-Romanian Christian-Democratic People’s Party that has 11 mandates. Both parties said they would boycott the presidential elections. <\/p>\n

In Moldova, the president is elected by the parliament and has to receive at least 61 votes. If he is not elected after two attempts, the parliament will be dissolved, and a new election will be called. <\/p>\n

However observers believe that the Communists will get the necessary votes through backstage negotiations both with individual parties that make up BDM and the Christian-Democratic People’s Party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
