WASHINGTON – The United States charged Monday that some "negative trends" were seen in Moldova’s elections that had affected the outcome of its parliamentary polls. <\/p>\n

Moldova’s Communist party retained its dominant position Monday after weekend elections that, according to final results, confirmed the former Soviet republic’s pro-European turn in the past few months. <\/p>\n

The Communists, who have recently distanced themselves from Moscow and shifted towards the West, won over 46.1 percent of Sunday’s vote, the central election commission said, with all the ballots counted. <\/p>\n

The US State Department said Monday that it agreed with an assessment by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) that while the elections generally complied with most international standards, "it fell short of meeting some that are central to a genuinely competitive election process." <\/p>\n

Department spokesman Richard Boucher said "we regret that the preliminary assessment confirms negative trends first seen in 2003’s local elections, including issues of access to the media." <\/p>\n

US officials, he said, had spoken about these problems in the lead-up to the election and raised them directly with Moldovan officials. <\/p>\n

"We saw, I’d say, some late progress in addressing some of these issues but still our concerns over the course of the lead-in to the election did, we think, impinge upon the outcome," Boucher said. <\/p>\n

The United States called on Moldova to take immediate steps to implement calls by the OSCE and Council of Europe for ensuring future elections are "fully free and fair," he said. <\/p>\n
