The international community does not support a particular party or candidate in the Moldovan parliamentary elections, reads a joint statement of foreign diplomats in Chisinau in response to the February 9 open letter of the Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM) which criticized the activity of Coalition-2005.<\/p>\n

The j\"\"oint statement is signed by Embassy of France, Embassy of Germany, Embassy of Hungary, Embassy of the Netherlands, Embassy of Poland, Embassy of Sweden, Section for Cooperation with Moldova, Embassy of the United Kingdom, Embassy of the United States, Mission of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, special representative of the secretary-general of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n

"The election-related programmes sponsored by the international community in Moldova are part of broader democracy assistance efforts designed to promote independent media, rule of law, civil society development, and open and transparent political processes. We fully believe that the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (CCALC) is committed to these principles.," reads the joint statement.<\/p>\n

"Our focus is on the electoral process. We stand ready to work with any government legitimately elected in a free and fair process," it said.<\/p>\n

"For nearly a year the international community has made clear, publicly and privately, that we were watching the Moldovan parliamentary election closely and that we considered it an indication of Moldova’s commitment to democracy. We continue to hope that Moldova will not fail this test," it added.<\/p>\n

PCRM accused on Wednesday Coalition-2005 of subjectivism and bias in electoral monitoring in an open letter signed by PCRM Secretary Victor Stepaniuc on behalf of the party.<\/p>\n

"The coalition was to contribute to the free, fair, transparent and democratic elections to parliament, but we can see that the actions and conclusions of this organisation demonstrate a low level of observation and analysis of pre-electoral processes, while the final results are unilateral, subjective and biassed," reads the letter.<\/p>\n

The PCRM accused Coalition-2005 of "open political partisanship in favour of the Democratic Moldova Bloc – a party supported by the Tiraspol separatist regime."<\/p>\n

The first reaction to the open letter of PCRM came from the U.S. Embassy to Moldova, which was "very disappointed" over what the Communists said about Coalition-2005.<\/p>\n

The Embassy said in a statement that "the open letter of Victor Stepaniuc accuses directly the United States and other international donors of violation of Moldova’s election legislation through support for a certain political party." "This is a groundless accusation. The U.S. has done its best to ensure our transparent and non-aligned support for election-related programmes in Moldova," reads the statement.<\/p>\n

"Coalition-2005 was always open to all NGOs which support free and fair elections. Even the fact that the coalition brings together 152 organisations should clearly show that it is not affiliated to any party. We have no reasons to throw doubts on efforts of Coalition-2005 to monitor and objectively report on electoral process," it added.<\/p>\n

In turn, PCRM was surprised over reaction of the U.S. Embassy to Moldova to the open letter of the party regarding the activity of Coalition-2005.<\/p>\n

"The U.S. Embassy dismisses some alleged accusations against itself, though our letter did not contain such accusations. The PCRM has offered the possibility to financiers of this coalition to make a true image of the situation, but it does not accuse them," the party said.<\/p>\n

CCALC described as "groundless and irrational" the declarations of PCRM on February 9, when it accused the coalition of "subjectivism and political partisanship."<\/p>\n

Coalition-2005 labelled the "accusations regarding support of the illegal Tiraspol regime as absolutely aberrant."<\/p>\n

"Coalition-2005 holds monitoring activities on basis of principles and standards accepted at international level," it said in a declaration on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Last May, 12 nongovernmental organisations created the civic coalition for free and fair elections aimed "to contribute to organisation of free, fair, transparent and democratic elections in the Moldovan parliament, consolidation of civil society, respect for rights of electors and principles of equality of participants in the electoral process," according to coalition members.<\/p>\n
