The Federation of Students’ and Youth Organizations of Moldova has voiced disagreement with the Central Electoral Commission’s decision according to university and college \"\"students shall be voting at their native places, not in Chisinau or other towns where they study. <\/p>\n

Federation Chairman Angel Agachi told a news conference in Infotag today that the students are insisting on the system of voting used in Moldova before – at the localities where they study. <\/p>\n

"We condemn the CEC’s decision and demand its cancellation, for it is an obstacle to our suffrage. We have raised more than 3 thousand signatures for drawing up voters’ rolls. We are demanding that extra ballot boxes be installed at educational institutions for our voting", Agachi stated. <\/p>\n

He considers as totally unfounded the Communist authorities’ apprehensions that voting at universities and colleges may create conditions for falsifications and election rigging. <\/p>\n

"Generations of students used to vote at their study places. Exactly this method, in foreign observers’ viewpoint, presents an example of fair and correct election holding", stated the Federation Chairman. <\/p>\n

Anatol Ialau of Institute of Political and Real Sciences stated the authorities are simply afraid that the young generation will be voting for "wrong parties". <\/p>\n

"The Government is ready to pay for each student’s traveling home and back being perfectly sure than an overwhelming majority of students would prefer to stay in the city. There are approximately 100 thousand students in Chisinau, and 80 percent of them are the provincial youth. Besides this, we are not at all sure that the available passenger transport would be able to carry such a considerable number of extra travelers", Mr. Ialau said. <\/p>\n

It was stressed at the news conference that students from Transnistria are in a much more complicated situation, for they will have no possibility to vote even if they decide to go home, because Tiraspol is not going to open polling stations there. The methods used by Communists are aimed at only one objective – to prevent students from voting for their future, said the Federation representatives. <\/p>\n

The Federation has announced that on Wednesday, February 9, students will hold a massive march of protest against their isolation from the electoral process. Permission from the Chisinau Municipality for the march has already been received. The students will start walking along the central at noon, heading to the Office of the President. <\/p>\n

The parliamentary elections will be held on Sunday, March 6. As a rule, a majority of provincial students go home for weekends to see their parents. That weekend is going to be very special not only because of the elections: two days later, on March 8, the entire republic will be celebrating one of the most popular official holidays – the Women’s Day. Most probably, the Monday of March 7 will be announced a no-work day, so the unexpected ‘spring mini-vacation’ will last from March 5 to March 8. It is impossible to imagine that students will prefer to remain in Chisinau only for the sake of voting. <\/p>\n
