The Democratic Moldova Bloc (BMD) "has just begun an open struggle with the forces that have been governing [Moldova] in the past four years," BMD leader Serafim Urechean said at a meeting organised by his party in Chisinau last Sunday to mark the formal beginning of BMD’s campaign for parliament. He described the meeting as "the launch" of BMD. <\/p>\n

Urechean first made public the bloc’s electoral promises last spring. He claimed that BMD "will create hundreds of thousands of well-paid jobs" and that "Europe will be brought into our homes." The Chisinau mayor also challenged President Vladimir Voronin for a live televised debate. <\/p>\n

Dumitru Diacov, a co-chairman of BMD and leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party, placed the bloc between the ruling Communist Party (PCRM) and the Christian Democratic People’s Party (PPCD) in terms of doctrine, and Oleg Serebrian, another co-chairman and leader of the Social-Liberal Party, urged all opposition parties to join BMD. <\/p>\n

Participants in the meeting wore yellow vests and mufflers; this was agreed to be the official colour of BMD in the 2005 elections. Orange flags and mufflers were waved in the crowd though orange was declared the official electoral colour of the Christian Democratic People’s Party last week. <\/p>\n
