Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has nominated incumbent Premier Vasily Tarlev as candidate for the head of a new government, and entrusted formation of the new government to him. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin read out his Presidential Decree in parliament today. By law, the nominated candidate is supposed to form Cabinet and present it to parliament for consideration and approval. The new government is approved by a simple majority – by minimum 52 votes in the 101-seat Moldovan Parliament. <\/p>\n

The President recommended Vasily Tarlev to restructure the executive power organ, saying that only 17 ministries should remain instead of the existing 16 ministries and 14 departments of government. The head of state has set a "desirable deadline" for the Government reform completion – July 1, 2006. <\/p>\n

THe March 6 parliamentary election winner, the Communist Party, now holds 56 mandates in parliament and thus is eligible to form Government all by itself. However, there exist grounds to expect that the Communist Government will receive support of an absolute majority of parliamentarians. <\/p>\n

The "silent coalition" formed during this week’s presidential election in parliament. On April 4, Voronin received 75 votes in his support, although the minimum necessary number was 61. The valuable help came to Vladimir Voronin from the Christian Democratic Popular Party faction of 11 MPs, Democratic Party (8), and Social Liberal Party group (3). The latter two have recently got off the ‘train’ that delivered them to parliament – the Democratic Moldova voting bloc. This faction, which is now called Moldova Noastra Alliance, has remained in fact the only opposition force in the forum, with only 23 deputies.
