The village of Stroie\u0219ti in R\u00eebni\u021ba rayon is located on the left bank of Nistru river. The October sun left its color on the leaves and the valleys all around. The houses are built at the foothills or even between the rocky hills. Like in many other localities alongside Nistru, the houses are small and have preserved their traditional rural architecture. The stone fences are waist-high, and their gates maintain the same height.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The luckiest seem to be the households located in the first rows, because they see a different painting of the river every season. What makes the village special is the large number of springs and the vine yards stretched across terraces built by Wittgenstein, a Russian Officer of German descent. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

There are so many springs in Stroie\u0219ti, that people stopped \u201cbaptizing\u201d them a long time ago. The director of the local museum, Rasina Vacari, tells us that the name of one of the springs is \u201c\u0416\u0435\u043b\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u201d (from Russian: The desired one). Legends say that a spring emerged between the lands of two men. They would always quarrel and couldn\u2019t share the water source. One day, Ekaterina the Great, the Empress of Russia, visited Stroie\u0219ti. She found out about the spring and asked one of the two men to take care of it. That night, the other man dreamt that in his garden, under a rock, a new spring started to flow. Immediately as he woke up, he ran to the garden and found the rock. This is how the spring \u201c\u0416\u0435\u043b\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u201d – the desired spring – was born.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThere are many stories and legends in our village,\u201d adds Rasina. The director tells us about a family deported to Siberia. After a decade living there, the family returns to Stroie\u0219ti. But the daughter of the family stays in Siberia and after a while becomes severely ill. One night, she dreams that at one end of her home village, there is a spring with healing water. She writes a letter to her father asking him to bring her water from that spring. So he does, and travels to Siberia in order to save his daughter. After the first sip of water from that spring, people say that she was cured.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

If you walk around the village and ask people about Wittgenstein, you will certainly get a prompt answer, because the village developed thanks to this person. Ludwig Adolph Peter Wittgenstein (1769-1843) is a descendent of an old German family. He was a commanding officer in the Russian army during the Russian-Turkish war of 1828. His <\/span>troops were stationed in Bessarabia<\/span><\/a>, but his family settles in this region earlier, in 1805, after the wife of Count Wittgenstein bought land here. In 1819, they start building their mansion in Camenca, which belonged to the historic region of Podolia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 1820s, Wittgenstein decides to plant vines on the hilly landscape in a region near Nistru river. He invites winegrowers from Germany, who bring their experience in organizing vine terraces on slopes. Wittgenstein brings planting materials from Germany, France, varieties like Pinot Noir, Riesling, Traminer, Muscat, Chasselas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The slope\u2019s location provided favorable conditions due to the fact that it faced South, while also being protected from the cold North winds. After ten years, Camenca winery becomes one of the biggest wine producers and suppliers in the South region of Russia. \u201cA vineyard based on intensive production model. This was possible only by planting the vines on artificial terraces, thus emerging one of the oldest agricultural landscapes in a natural site, without reducing its aesthetic value. On the contrary, once it underwent anthropization, it became more expressive,\u201d explains Aurelia Tifan in her doctoral thesis in architecture regarding the \u201c<\/span>The architecture of winery complexes in the Republic of Moldova<\/span><\/a>\u201d, published in 2020. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Identical terraces were built at 30 km away from the Nistru river, in the village of Stroie\u0219ti. People in the village named this place \u201cthe slope without a shadow\u201d. \u201cBecause there is never any shadow here. The sun rises on one part of the slope and sets on the other,\u201d explains the director of the Stroie\u0219ti museum, Rasina Vacari. If you got to this village, people would point to the terraces on the slopes when you ask them about Wittgenstein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>The director tells us that this Count had seven children: six boys and a girl. \u201cBecause they loved their daughter very much, they gifted Stroie\u0219ti to her.\u201d Emilia, Wittgenstein\u2019s daughter, built the Tower of Winds on top of a hill in Stroie\u0219ti, and dedicated it to her father. The tower is approximately five metres high and is built without any adhesive between the natural stones, shaped in perfect squares. Even if a thunder struck one of the tower\u2019s columns, it still stands high on top of the hill.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After Emilia Wittgenstein-Trube\u021bcaia, Stroie\u0219ti belonged to Wittgenstein\u2019s niece, Maria. At the beginning of the last century, she builds the Countess\u2019 gazebo on the same rocky hill as the Tower of the Winds. Rasina Vacari tells us that this Countess was a very sad woman. She would come from Russia only in autumn, when the grapes were ripe. Rasina says that Maria would always have a lot of sweets, which she gave the children in the village. All these stories she knows from those children, now the elderly of the village.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The foundation of the gazebo is built in the same technique as the tower. The stones were extracted from the hills in the area, polished by hand in a manner that there wouldn\u2019t be any need for adhesive. From time to time, people try to restore the gazebo, so today you can see cement between the stones in the foundation. The wood covering the gazebo is rotting, and the wind \u201cstole\u201d a part of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The estate belonged to the Wittgenstein family until 1917, when the October Revolution started. Outraged peasants destroyed the mansion to the ground, and the family sought refuge in Germany. Collectivization started soon after, and the vineyard became the property of a sovkhoz. In the second half of the 20th century, the vineyard is destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You can\u2019t leave Stroie\u0219ti until you visit Iulia Gavrilovna, \u201cthe Mistress of the Copper Mountain\u201d. Her greatest joy is to receive guests from all over.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Iulia Paiul is almost 70 years old, 50 of which she lived in Stroie\u0219ti together with her husband, Nicolae. In front of their gate, they arranged a small round table with stump chairs around it. On the fence a beautiful traditional carpet is displayed. It was woven by Iulia and her mother when she was a child. They have decorated their yard with an improvised oven, a football, and some traditional embroidered towels are hanging in the middle of the leisure area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Iulia invites us in her home. \u201cPeople say that if you drink from a spring in Stroie\u0219ti, you will definitely come back. This is what happened to me too,\u201d she says with a big smile on her face. Iulia and her husband went to school in Orhei, where they were also supposed work after finishing their education, but Iulia refused. \u201cI am the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. I didn\u2019t want to leave this village. So, stone by stone, we put one on top of the other, and we built the house. We would always say that love lives in this small house.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Iulia was inspired by Slavic mythology, where there is a \u201cMistress of the Copper Mountain\u201d, i.e. the Mistress of the Ural Mountains. She jokes that she\u2019s the \u201cMistress of the Stroie\u0219ti Mountains\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She prepared a big round <\/span>pl\u0103cint\u0103 <\/span><\/i>with cheese. On other occasions, she serves tourists with <\/span>sarmale<\/span><\/i>, with traditional Moldovan deserts or just with some freshly baked bread. \u201cI want to share this with someone, even a piece of bread. And I want to have people at that round table\u2026 Here I built a small simple table and I want people around it,\u201d says Iulia with her warm voice, pointing to the freshly painted wooden table and chairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Once you step into her house, Iulia takes care of you, embracing you with her kindness. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Iulia Gavrilovna takes care of everyone. She organizes village celebrations, she insists on visiting the elderly, so they don\u2019t feel alone during the holidays. In November they have the Village Day. \u201cSince \u201888 we have this tradition. On the first day we go to church, then we invite people over to our house. On the second day we try and repair something or just clean up a place. We choose a spring or a well. But last year it was the pandemic and we didn\u2019t manage to do almost anything.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today Iulia can only receive guests for a few hours and serve them delicious food. Unfortunately, she can\u2019t accommodate them yet, because her house doesn\u2019t meet the necessary conditions. \u201cI\u2019ve had this dream for a long time. For people to see these places. I saw the world and I understood that you can build something here. Not like a museum or anything like that, but something simple to please the eye. And also to taste a little piece of bread,\u201d tells us Iulia. Her dream is to have the possibility to receive as many tourists as possible, for people to come here and see the village of Stroie\u0219ti with all its beauties.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Most of the visitors come from the right bank of Nistru river, and they don\u2019t only come here for visiting. Over the years, people from both banks of the river created strong ties between them. \u201cBlood is thicker than water and we are all one,\u201d says Rasina Vacari, the director of the Stroie\u0219ti museum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The village of Stroie\u0219ti in R\u00eebni\u021ba rayon is located on the left bank of Nistru river. The October sun left its color on the leaves and the valleys all around. The houses are built at the foothills or even between the rocky hills. Like in many other localities alongside Nistru, the houses are small and have preserved their traditional rural architecture. The stone fences are waist-high, and their gates maintain the same height.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The luckiest seem to be the households located in the first rows, because they see a different painting of the river every season. What makes the village special is the large number of springs and the vine yards stretched across terraces built by Wittgenstein, a Russian Officer of German descent. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

There are so many springs in Stroie\u0219ti, that people stopped \u201cbaptizing\u201d them a long time ago. The director of the local museum, Rasina Vacari, tells us that the name of one of the springs is \u201c\u0416\u0435\u043b\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u201d (from Russian: The desired one). Legends say that a spring emerged between the lands of two men. They would always quarrel and couldn\u2019t share the water source. One day, Ekaterina the Great, the Empress of Russia, visited Stroie\u0219ti. She found out about the spring and asked one of the two men to take care of it. That night, the other man dreamt that in his garden, under a rock, a new spring started to flow. Immediately as he woke up, he ran to the garden and found the rock. This is how the spring \u201c\u0416\u0435\u043b\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439\u201d – the desired spring – was born.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThere are many stories and legends in our village,\u201d adds Rasina. The director tells us about a family deported to Siberia. After a decade living there, the family returns to Stroie\u0219ti. But the daughter of the family stays in Siberia and after a while becomes severely ill. One night, she dreams that at one end of her home village, there is a spring with healing water. She writes a letter to her father asking him to bring her water from that spring. So he does, and travels to Siberia in order to save his daughter. After the first sip of water from that spring, people say that she was cured.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

If you walk around the village and ask people about Wittgenstein, you will certainly get a prompt answer, because the village developed thanks to this person. Ludwig Adolph Peter Wittgenstein (1769-1843) is a descendent of an old German family. He was a commanding officer in the Russian army during the Russian-Turkish war of 1828. His <\/span>troops were stationed in Bessarabia<\/span><\/a>, but his family settles in this region earlier, in 1805, after the wife of Count Wittgenstein bought land here. In 1819, they start building their mansion in Camenca, which belonged to the historic region of Podolia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 1820s, Wittgenstein decides to plant vines on the hilly landscape in a region near Nistru river. He invites winegrowers from Germany, who bring their experience in organizing vine terraces on slopes. Wittgenstein brings planting materials from Germany, France, varieties like Pinot Noir, Riesling, Traminer, Muscat, Chasselas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The slope\u2019s location provided favorable conditions due to the fact that it faced South, while also being protected from the cold North winds. After ten years, Camenca winery becomes one of the biggest wine producers and suppliers in the South region of Russia. \u201cA vineyard based on intensive production model. This was possible only by planting the vines on artificial terraces, thus emerging one of the oldest agricultural landscapes in a natural site, without reducing its aesthetic value. On the contrary, once it underwent anthropization, it became more expressive,\u201d explains Aurelia Tifan in her doctoral thesis in architecture regarding the \u201c<\/span>The architecture of winery complexes in the Republic of Moldova<\/span><\/a>\u201d, published in 2020. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Identical terraces were built at 30 km away from the Nistru river, in the village of Stroie\u0219ti. People in the village named this place \u201cthe slope without a shadow\u201d. \u201cBecause there is never any shadow here. The sun rises on one part of the slope and sets on the other,\u201d explains the director of the Stroie\u0219ti museum, Rasina Vacari. If you got to this village, people would point to the terraces on the slopes when you ask them about Wittgenstein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>The director tells us that this Count had seven children: six boys and a girl. \u201cBecause they loved their daughter very much, they gifted Stroie\u0219ti to her.\u201d Emilia, Wittgenstein\u2019s daughter, built the Tower of Winds on top of a hill in Stroie\u0219ti, and dedicated it to her father. The tower is approximately five metres high and is built without any adhesive between the natural stones, shaped in perfect squares. Even if a thunder struck one of the tower\u2019s columns, it still stands high on top of the hill.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After Emilia Wittgenstein-Trube\u021bcaia, Stroie\u0219ti belonged to Wittgenstein\u2019s niece, Maria. At the beginning of the last century, she builds the Countess\u2019 gazebo on the same rocky hill as the Tower of the Winds. Rasina Vacari tells us that this Countess was a very sad woman. She would come from Russia only in autumn, when the grapes were ripe. Rasina says that Maria would always have a lot of sweets, which she gave the children in the village. All these stories she knows from those children, now the elderly of the village.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The foundation of the gazebo is built in the same technique as the tower. The stones were extracted from the hills in the area, polished by hand in a manner that there wouldn\u2019t be any need for adhesive. From time to time, people try to restore the gazebo, so today you can see cement between the stones in the foundation. The wood covering the gazebo is rotting, and the wind \u201cstole\u201d a part of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The estate belonged to the Wittgenstein family until 1917, when the October Revolution started. Outraged peasants destroyed the mansion to the ground, and the family sought refuge in Germany. Collectivization started soon after, and the vineyard became the property of a sovkhoz. In the second half of the 20th century, the vineyard is destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You can\u2019t leave Stroie\u0219ti until you visit Iulia Gavrilovna, \u201cthe Mistress of the Copper Mountain\u201d. Her greatest joy is to receive guests from all over.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Iulia Paiul is almost 70 years old, 50 of which she lived in Stroie\u0219ti together with her husband, Nicolae. In front of their gate, they arranged a small round table with stump chairs around it. On the fence a beautiful traditional carpet is displayed. It was woven by Iulia and her mother when she was a child. They have decorated their yard with an improvised oven, a football, and some traditional embroidered towels are hanging in the middle of the leisure area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Iulia invites us in her home. \u201cPeople say that if you drink from a spring in Stroie\u0219ti, you will definitely come back. This is what happened to me too,\u201d she says with a big smile on her face. Iulia and her husband went to school in Orhei, where they were also supposed work after finishing their education, but Iulia refused. \u201cI am the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. I didn\u2019t want to leave this village. So, stone by stone, we put one on top of the other, and we built the house. Iulia was inspired by Slavic mythology, where there is a \u201cMistress of the Copper Mountain\u201d, i.e. the Mistress of the Ural Mountains. She jokes that she\u2019s the \u201cMistress of the Stroie\u0219ti Mountains\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She prepared a big round <\/span>pl\u0103cint\u0103 <\/span><\/i>with cheese. On other occasions, she serves tourists with <\/span>sarmale<\/span><\/i>, with traditional Moldovan deserts or just with some freshly baked bread. \u201cI want to share this with someone, even a piece of bread. And I want to have people at that round table\u2026 Here I built a small simple table and I want people around it,\u201d says Iulia with her warm voice, pointing to the freshly painted wooden table and chairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Iulia Gavrilovna takes care of everyone. She organizes village celebrations, she insists on visiting the elderly, so they don\u2019t feel alone during the holidays. In November they have the Village Day. \u201cSince \u201888 we have this tradition. On the first day we go to church, then we invite people over to our house. On the second day we try and repair something or just clean up a place. We choose a spring or a well. But last year it was the pandemic and we didn\u2019t manage to do almost anything.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today Iulia can only receive guests for a few hours and serve them delicious food. Unfortunately, she can\u2019t accommodate them yet, because her house doesn\u2019t meet the necessary conditions. \u201cI\u2019ve had this dream for a long time. For people to see these places. I saw the world and I understood that you can build something here. Not like a museum or anything like that, but something simple to please the eye. And also to taste a little piece of bread,\u201d tells us Iulia. Her dream is to have the possibility to receive as many tourists as possible, for people to come here and see the village of Stroie\u0219ti with all its beauties.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Most of the visitors come from the right bank of Nistru river, and they don\u2019t only come here for visiting. Over the years, people from both banks of the river created strong ties between them. \u201cBlood is thicker than water and we are all one,\u201d says Rasina Vacari, the director of the Stroie\u0219ti museum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
