There are <strong>393<\/strong> such monuments in the capital city only.<\/p>\n<p>However, most of these monuments have a tragic fate. It often happens that stories about the demolition of buildings of historical, architectural or artistic importance come to light. They are demolished hastily, without permits or with papers obtained through feeding an entire system of corrupt officials.<\/p>\n<p>That is the case of the <strong>National Hotel <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Gaudeamus Cinema<\/strong>. What is more, even though the buildings had such a status, <span style=\"color: #993300;\">that wouldn&#8217;t provide any guarantee that they wouldn&#8217;t be demolished one day in Moldova.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, monuments that should be <em>&#8220;studied, enhanced, saved, protected, preserved and restored&#8221;<\/em>, as provided by law, are barely visible through the surrounding shrubbery, being simply abandoned, while rain and wind erode them.<\/p>\n<p>One example is <strong>&#8220;Yuri Gagarin&#8221; Youth Center<\/strong> that used to be an international cultural centre, where music and dance festivals were organized during the Soviet times. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the centre was shut down and then privatized. A legal solution that the owners could resort to in such a case is to dismantle and later to mount the mosaic on another building. However, some experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moldova.org\/cladiri-din-chisinau-cu-potential-dar-cu-viitor-incert\/\">say<\/a> that, in such a way, the mosaic <span style=\"color: #993300;\">would lose its cultural context, because it was designed and built for a certain building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another relevant example is<strong> &#8220;Guguta&#8221; Cafe<\/strong>. This is where the &#8220;Occupy Guguta&#8221; movement was born and protests were organised, as the building was supposed to be demolished to make way for a 12-storey hotel owned by the oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc. But that is often done without taking into account the international standards of monuments&#8217; conservation.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Chisinau City Hall has <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaker.md\/ro\/concurs-international-pentru-cel-mai-bun-concept-de-reamenajare-a-gradinii-stefan-cel-mare-si-a-scuarului-catedralei\/\">initiated<\/a> a contest for the best re-design concept of the &#8220;Stefan cel Mare si Sfant&#8221; Public Garden and the Cathedral Square in Chisinau. The contest that was declared opened for any world&#8217;s architectural office limited the participation languages to Romanian and Russian. Moreover, the contest organisation was also criticised, as it offered prizes for the 2nd and 3rd places as well. In total, 10 thousand euros would be offered to the contestants (6000 euros for the 2nd place and 4000 euros for the 3rd place), even if their projects would not be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s urban landscape of Chisinau is more than chaotic, that being the exact way Chisinau inherited its architecture &#8211; <strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">corruption, dilettantism and indifference.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to conclusions made by the <strong>Council of Europe<\/strong> experts, <em>&#8220;Moldova has a considerable urban and rural real estate heritage, which deserves to be adequately valued.&#8221;<\/em> The situation in Chisinau is believed to be critical: the urban landscape of Chisinau&#8217;s historic centre <em>&#8220;is already severely affected by numerous divergent constructions, representing an unattractive and low-interest contemporary architecture. Many valuable buildings are used improperly, while others are abandoned &#8211; left to degrade and ruin. <span style=\"color: #993300;\">30% of the built heritage is in danger<\/span>,&#8221;<\/em> the experts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparency.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/TI_Moldova_Observator_Nr30.pdf\">said<\/a>. They also claimed that if the situation continued to depreciate, Chisinau would lose its architectural heritage in less than a decade.
