The vaccination process is ongoing in Moldova. Starting May 19, the third stage of COVID-19 vaccination campaign<\/span> was launched.<\/a> Thus, full access to all available jabs was granted to all citizens of the country. People are called to get vaccinated every day.<\/p>\n

To date, the Republic of Moldova has received 1 567 350 doses of vaccine<\/strong>, Moldovans being able to choose from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Sinovac, Sinopharm and Sputnik-V – almost all major manufacturers on the global market.<\/p>\n

A total of 1 111 680 jabs<\/strong> have already been administered in Moldova and 545 219 people have been immunized with both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as the national vaccination platform<\/a> displayed. COVID-19 immunization coverage reached 18.8%<\/strong> this week. 87.5% of medical workers have been immunized against the virus. Moldova averaged about 8 999 doses <\/strong>administered\u00a0each day. At that rate, it will take a further\u00a060 days to administer enough doses for another 10%<\/span> of the population, Reuters said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The latest figures provided<\/a> by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection (MHLSP) showed that 99% of people hospitalized in intensive care units with severe forms of COVID-19 were not vaccinated<\/span><\/strong>. According to Svetlana Nicolaescu, Secretary of State of the MHLSP, these figures are a confirmation of the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines administered in the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0survey<\/a> conducted by WHO Regional Office for Europe and presented by the MHLSP showed that 41%<\/strong> of respondents would agree to get vaccinated and that the share of people who said they surely would not be vaccinated has decreased. Even more optimistic were the results displayed by a survey<\/a> conducted by UNICEF in cooperation with the MHLSP: more than half of Moldovan respondents (55%) intended to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and more than a half of the total number of respondents (60%) believed that thanks to COVID-19 vaccines and compliance with preventive measures, the virus would be defeated and we would be able to return to normal life.<\/p>\n

However, most Moldovans still didn’t receive their jabs since the beginning of the vaccination campaign in March 2021. Moreover, some of them don’t intend to get vaccinated. Why?<\/p>\n

The majority of Moldova’s population resides in the rural areas<\/strong> (61.8% according to the data of the last census<\/a>). Some of them live in remote localities, without a pharmacy or a medical institution. That forces people to commute to the neighbouring villages or cities for accessing medical services, including administration of vaccines. Moreover, limited access to vaccines centres due to their concentration in larger cities makes the vaccination process much slower.<\/p>\n

A recent poll<\/a> concluded that Moldovans have their most confidence in the church<\/strong> (almost 71%<\/span> of respondents). Government and Parliament are the last on the list (15.8% and 12.7% respectively), while only 31.5% of respondents said Government did a good job of managing the pandemic crisis. That could be one of the reason why people do not take the mass information campaigns organized by state institutions seriously, but rather pay attention to protests<\/a> of certain anti-vaxxer priests.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Orthodox Church (MOC) welcomed recently the vaccination campaign conducted in Moldova, radically changing its position after spreading false information regarding COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Another issue that has had a great impact on the way Moldovan citizens perceive the vaccination process is the fake news<\/strong> phenomenon itself. When the COVID-19 pandemic started, the concept of infodemic<\/em>\u00a0appeared as well – the uncontrolled spread of rumours and horror stories about viruses and vaccines. Such rumours were effectively shared online, on social networks. “When people have no knowledge, they amplify the influence of misinformation and maintain the false news ecosystem. The rumours about vaccines and coronavirus continues to be filled with new rumours. And after reading about the dangers of COVID-19 vaccines on the internet, parents may have doubts when deciding whether to vaccinate their children against other infectious diseases,”<\/em> claimed<\/a> UNICEF representatives.<\/p>\n

Also, people in Moldova seem to have clear preferences<\/strong> when it comes to choosing a vaccine producer. According to the MHLSP data<\/a>, of the total jabs received in the Republic of Moldova, over 98% of Sputnik doses were used, as well as<\/span><\/span> 82% of Sinovac doses, while over 35% of Pfizer, over 70% of Sinopharm, and 73% of Johnson & Johnson supplies (one of the last vaccine batches arrived) still remained unused.<\/p>\n

According to a survey<\/a> conducted by Magenta Consulting, 30% of Moldovans would choose Sputnik if they were given the choice<\/span>, followed by Astra Zeneca – with 16% and Pfizer – with 15%. At the same time, 30% of respondents say they are against vaccination. Most of those who are against vaccination are young people aged 18-35. 45% of them say they will not get any of the available vaccines. 30.1% of respondents believe<\/a> that vaccination would not help fighting against the pandemic at all.<\/p>\n
