During the last year, they earned and spent less. But have Moldovans learned their lesson, so they would be more prepared when the next crisis arises?<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, a Moldovan earned, on average, <span style=\"color: #993300;\">3096.6 lei per month<\/span> (about 148 euros), while the real <strong>income<\/strong> of the population registered an increase of only 3.6% as compared to 2019. Wages remained the most important source of income for the Moldovan population (50.2% of total incomes), as the <a href=\"https:\/\/statistica.gov.md\/newsview.php?l=ro&amp;idc=168&amp;id=6948\">data<\/a> of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) presented.<\/p>\n<p>People residing in rural areas, which represents the majority of the country&#8217;s population, is overall more dependent on transfers from abroad (16.1% compared to 9.4% in the case of the urban population), as well as on social benefits (20.7% of total income, compared to 17.9% in urban areas).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, a Moldovan citizen spent, on average, <span style=\"color: #993300;\">2791.2 lei per month<\/span> (about 133 euros) in 2020, that being 3.5% less than in 2019 (in real terms). Most of <strong>expenses<\/strong> were represented by food consumption &#8211; 43.5%, while 16.1% were costs for housing and bills, 8.8% for clothing and footwear, 5.5% for transport services, 4.7% for health, and 4.7% for telecommunications. The population from urban areas spent more money on recreation and culture (3.6% urban vs. 1.2% rural areas), education (1.0% urban vs. 0.5% rural areas) and restaurants and hotels (3.3% urban vs. 0.6% rural areas).<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that, in recent years, a negative trend of making <strong>savings<\/strong> has been registered (Moldovan citizens spent and borrowed more than they earned), the propensity to save increased by 2.1% in 2020, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/ionita.md\/2021\/08\/03\/014-analize-economice-inclinatia-spre-economii-ale-populatiei\/\">analysis<\/a> of the economic expert Veaceslav Ionita.<em> &#8220;The propensity to save [net deposits in banks in relation to the income of citizens] is reduced in our country due to poverty, as well as a weak culture of using financial resources and financial instruments. In recent years, we are witnessing a strong consumption and less savings,&#8221;<\/em> the expert <a href=\"https:\/\/ionita.md\/2021\/08\/03\/014-analize-economice-inclinatia-spre-economii-ale-populatiei\/\">explained<\/a>. On the other hand, <em>&#8220;2020 was a year of crisis. The citizens did not venture into expenses, rather deposited their money in the bank accounts.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is though a problem related to the way individuals manage their savings from banks: deposits increased exclusively from interest-free or sighted deposits with low interest in 2020. Term deposits, which would bring higher income to their owners, on the other hand, registered a decrease, the economic expert <a href=\"https:\/\/ionita.md\/2021\/01\/21\/in-2020-economiile-moldovenilor-din-banci-au-crescut-cu-52-miliarde-lei-si-pentru-prima-data-au-depasit-nivelul-de-50-miliarde-lei\/\">informed<\/a>. <em>&#8220;Due to non-profit deposits in 2020 alone, individuals have lost interest income of about 600 million lei. All in all, since 2013, these losses have exceeded 3.4 billion lei.&#8221;<\/em> The expert believes that this happens due to poor public confidence in banks, but also the fact that Moldovans receive their salaries on checking accounts and leave them there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;What is certain is that this money currently does not bring income to depositors, but neither can commercial banks use these deposits efficiently, which creates an excess of liquidity in the banking system, given that the economy needs credit resources. In other words, we are living on &#8216;dead money&#8217;, which cannot be used and does not bring income to their owners.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2020, less transactions using <strong>debit and credit cards<\/strong> were <a href=\"https:\/\/ionita.md\/2021\/01\/14\/pandemia-i-a-tinut-pe-moldoveni-acasa-si-le-a-economisit-12-miliarde-lei-doar-din-platile-cu-cardul-bancar\/\">performed<\/a> by Moldovans residing in the country and abroad. The number of online purchases declined, as well as the number of transfers for vacations abroad. What is more, Moldovan citizens invested less money in real estate. The NBS <a href=\"https:\/\/statistica.gov.md\/newsview.php?l=ro&amp;idc=168&amp;id=7061#idc=557&amp;\">data<\/a> showed that <span style=\"color: #993300;\">7 549 houses<\/span> (individual apartments and houses) were put into service last year, that being 24.2% less than in 2019. People started to rather move in houses in rural areas, that being the only rising segment of the real estate market.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens&#8217; <strong>indebtedness<\/strong> growth rate was lower than usual due to the crisis. Last year, the volume of loans that were taken out increased by 2.2 billion lei and reached a total of 25.8 billion lei. That is while, in the last five years, there has been a threefold increase in loan volume. Today, Moldovans have debts in banks and in the non-banking sector of almost <span style=\"color: #993300;\">29 billion lei or 13.8% of GDP<\/span>. That is 3 times more than ten years ago, when it was 4.5% of GDP.
