The Moldovan media outlets kept an eye on the events happening in Parliament all day. Today, the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) attended the plenary session where the most important offices were voted.<\/p>\n

The working day started at 10 o’clock when the quorum was concluded – 91 of the 101 MPs were present. First, 3 parliamentary groups were officialised<\/a> in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova of the 11th Legislature: the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS)<\/strong> with 63 seats, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS)<\/strong> with 32 seats and the “Shor” Political Party<\/strong> with 6 seats, including the leader of the group Ilan Shor who has been a fugitive for more than 2 years now.<\/p>\n

The PAS members form the majority government. “We will seriously perform our parliamentary control function, we will organise public hearings and we will make sure that it works in the interest of the citizen. […] We must vote good laws, we must work in partnership with institutions that want the best for the people. We need to get to work, clean the judiciary, increase people’s incomes, accelerate European integration and strengthen relations with external partners,”<\/em> declared<\/a> President of the PAS parliamentary group, Mihail Popsoi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The BCS and “Shor” placed themselves in “opposition”<\/em> and “constructive opposition”<\/em>, respectively. Vladimir Voronin<\/strong> – the ex-president of the country and a current MP – gave a speech about how the communists and socialists would charge any attack on the constitutionality of the Republic of Moldova. “We will oppose attempts to infringe on the rights of interethnic groups. We will be against attempts to question the identity and statehood of the Republic of Moldova,”<\/em> he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next, the leader of PAS, Igor Grosu<\/strong>, was named the candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament. The BCS members refused to participate in the secret ballot procedure. Igor Grosu was voted Speaker of Parliament by 64 MPs.<\/p>\n

The last things decided<\/a> today concerned who would be the 12 members of Parliament’s permanent office. Here is where socialists and communists got angry and confused that 32 seats don’t actually mean one third of total seats, shouting that they had been wronged.<\/p>\n

MPs also voted to set up parliamentary committees. Thus, 8 committees will be led by PAS MPs, and another 3 – by those of BCS.<\/p>\n

The new Parliament includes<\/a> 40 women as MPs, which represents 39.6% of the total number of seats.<\/span> That is a record number in the history of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. In 2019, 25.7% of MPs were women.<\/p>\n

The average age of MPs is 47 years. 14 of the 101 members of the Legislature are aged up to 35. The youngest MP is 22, the eldest – 81.<\/p>\n
