The population of the Republic of Moldova decreased by 47.7 thousand people in 2020.<\/span> That happened due to the emigration (36.8 thousand citizens) and the natural population decrease (9.9 thousand people), according to the data<\/a> published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).<\/strong><\/p>\n

A negative natural change was registered for the third consecutive year, the maximum level being reached in 2020. “It is an unprecedented situation in the history of the country, when 3 years in a row, the number of newborns is much lower than the number of deceased people. In other words, the nation is dying,”<\/em> the economic expert Veaceslav Ionita<\/strong> explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The factor that contributed the most to the decrease of population is the largest exodus in the history of Moldova. The sad national statistics<\/a> showed that the total number of people who left the country in the last 5 years amounted to 212 thousand people<\/span>. The peak of this phenomenon was recorded in 2016-2017, when almost 100 thousand people left the country. The experts estimated that the total number of people living abroad reached 923 thousand citizens (calculated as the number of persons residing abroad for at least 12 months). “To this number must be added at least 100-150 thousand people, who commute for shorter periods, less than 12 months.”<\/em> That makes a total of 1.1 million citizens or 26.4% of the population<\/span>, as compared to 5 years ago, when every fifth Moldovan had been living abroad.<\/p>\n

The share of people in the 30 to 34 age group residing in the Republic of Moldova decreased in 2020, as compared to 2019. The same happened to those aged between 20 and 24. The working force of the country was represented by 66.7% of the total population, this figure also declining as compared to the previous year. Nowadays, Moldova has an even more ageing population, as is there are less and less people aged 0-14 and more people aged 65 and over.<\/p>\n

As Veaceslav Ionita stated, the situation is even worse in the Transnistrian region: 34% or every third inhabitant of the left bank of the Dniester lives abroad.<\/span> “Of the 463 thousand inhabitants of the region, only 305 thousand people are still residing in the country. Other 158 thousand people live abroad.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Moldovan diaspora had the last word at the snap parliamentary elections held on July 11. Therefore, 14 MPs seats were elected<\/a> by 212 145 people who voted at the polling stations established abroad.<\/p>\n
