The National Bureau of Statistics<\/strong> (NBS) informed in a statement<\/a> that the number of deaths<\/span> increased by 11.7% in 2020<\/span> when compared to 2019. The total figure was 40 656 cases recorded in 2020.<\/p>\n

The official data said that most Moldovans died because of circulatory diseases (56.3%).\u00a0 14.6% of the registered deaths were caused by malignant tumours, 7.7% by digestive diseases, 4.8% of people died in accidents, or because of intoxications and traumas, 4.0% of Moldovans had a respiratory problem and 12.6% because of other causes. The women’s mortality rate through diseases of the circulatory system was 12.4% higher than that recorded for men. On the other hand, a male higher mortality rate was observed when it comes to accidents, intoxications and traumas – the mortality rate was 4 times higher than that observed for women. Mortality from respiratory diseases was 1.9 times higher, that from malignant tumours 1.4 times higher, and the one from digestive diseases 1.3 times higher for men when compared to women.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the birth rate decreased by 5.2% in 2020<\/span>, when compared to the previous year, according to the data<\/a> provided by the NBS. Of the number of live births, 52.4% were boys, the masculinity ratio being 110 boys per 100 girls. Official figures showed that every 5th child in Moldova was born out of wedlock (6 088 people or 19.8% of the total).<\/p>\n

More children were born in rural areas. In 2020, there were 12 149 children (or 39.5% of total live births) born in urban areas and 18 581 live births (constituting 60.5% of total live births) recorded in rural areas. Also, there was a smaller shares of families with four or more children living in the cities, most of the families with four or more children returning to rural areas.<\/p>\n

The highest number of live births in urban areas is registered for mothers aged 25-34 years (7 709 live births or 63.5% of all live births in cities), while the same figure was between 20-29 years in rural areas (10 383 children or 55.9% of all live births in villages). In 2020, the average age of a mother at first birth was 25.2 years. 5.9% of total women who gave birth were those under the age of 20. Still, the rate of early births decreased by 1.2% in 2020 as compared to 2019.<\/p>\n

Given the continuously increasing death rate and the decreasing birth rate, it can be concluded that the population of the Republic of Moldova is declining quite fast, the phenomenon being sharpened even more by the emigration process.<\/p>\n

Is there a solution?<\/h3>\n

The negative demographic challenge is also addressed at the European Union level. MEPs want<\/a> it to be a priority for the EU, alongside climate issues and the digital transition. An EU-wide strategy is aimed to be developed, integrating the principles of sustainability, greening and digitalisation across different EU policies.<\/p>\n

National and local authorities are supposed to come up with recovery plans for the most vulnerable regions. The focus should be transport networks, rural tourism, investments in the digital sector, spread of teleworking and a digital online education system accessible to everyone, according to the EU officials.<\/p>\n
