About 32% of them went on a vacation at least once in the last five years (15% went once a year, 12% &#8211; once every few years, and 5% &#8211; 2-3 times a year).<\/p>\n<p>The situation is a bit better for young people who are aged 18 to 29 &#8211; 54.4% or every second young person travels at least once in a few years. People aged 60+ is the category with the lowest incomes. As a consequence, only 13% of them go on vacations, or every seventh person, as it is mentioned in an <a href=\"https:\/\/ionita.md\/2021\/05\/17\/comunicat-in-republica-moldova-2-3-dintre-moldoveni-nu-merg-nici-odata-la-odihna-studiu\/\">analysis<\/a> conducted by the economic expert <strong>Veaceslav Ionita<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the evaluation of the Moldovan tourist profile shows that <span style=\"color: #993300;\">people with higher education and higher standard of living, while living in urban areas, are those who can afford travelling more often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most Moldovans use to travel abroad (80% in 2019, 69% in 2020), their favourite destinations being Ukraine (47%), Bulgaria (31%), Turkey (17%), Greece and Romania (12%), as well as Italy (10%). Thus, <strong>Moldovan citizens mostly choose to travel to the neighbouring countries that have lower prices in order to minimise their expenses.<\/strong> Travelling is not a priority for them &#8211; a typical phenomenon for low-income countries. Still, 130 thousand Moldovans or 5% of the population use to travel more than once a year. There are almost 570 thousand citizens who go on vacation abroad, while the total number of trips is almost 800 thousand.<\/p>\n<p>About 20% of tourists usually decide to stay in the country, most of the domestic tourists being people aged 60 and over. People with a higher standard of living choose to stay in Moldova on every second or third trip.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, Moldovans <strong>don&#8217;t use the services of travel agencies for organising their trips<\/strong> (74%), as this includes additional costs. The economic expert Veaceslav Ionita suggested that the Moldovan tourism market is underexploited. <em>&#8220;We have only 30% of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who go on vacations and only a quarter of them do it through a travel agency,&#8221;<\/em> said Ionita.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong>National Bureau of Statistics<\/strong> (NBS) <a href=\"https:\/\/statistica.gov.md\/newsview.php?l=ro&amp;idc=168&amp;id=6938\">data<\/a>, in 2020, travel agencies from Moldova provided services to only 124.5 thousand tourists. <span style=\"color: #993300;\">The number of tourists decreased by 252.1 thousand visitors when compared to 2019<\/span>, due to the reduction of outbound tourism by 235.9 thousand visitors (-76.0%), inbound tourism &#8211; by 12.9 thousand visitors (-65.0%) and domestic tourism &#8211; by 3.3 thousand visitors (-7.1%).<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the pandemic has dramatically affected the Moldovan tourism, says the economist. In 2020, the number of people travelling decreased by 4.3 times. In 2019, 784 thousand trips were registered, while in 2020 &#8211; about 180 thousand. The biggest drop was recorded for trips abroad. In 2019, there were 645 thousand trips for leisure purposes abroad. The next year, they were at the level of 120 thousand. The domestic tourism suffered as well: there were 140 thousand trips for leisure purposes within the borders of the Republic of Moldova in 2019, whereas this figure decreased to 60 thousand during the pandemic crisis. The drop in the number of trips was caused by the border restrictions, as well as the limited budgets of Moldovans.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The citizens of the Republic of Moldova must be encouraged to create a lifestyle with the introduction of trips in the family agenda. They must be encouraged to go on trips in the Republic of Moldova, in the green areas of the country. At the same time, we must encourage organised travelling. Travel agencies have a lot of work in educating a behaviour of consumption of tourism products.
