The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)\u00a0published<\/a> 2 brochures presenting important social and economic figures of Moldova compared to the average in the EU-27 countries. “The figures represent a set of graphically represented data, useful for the general public, but also for the decision-makers, for the further development of the country’s social and economic policies,”<\/em> the institution mentioned.<\/p>\n

Social statistics revealed by NBS include information regarding demographics, labour market, education and public health. Economic figures present data such as Gross Domestic Product in Moldova compared to the EU, industrial production, inflation rate, the activity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), environmental situation and agricultural production.<\/p>\n

Even though the pace of population aging is higher in the EU countries (average age of population, birth rate, share of young and elderly people in the total population), the share of children and aged persons who depend on other people’s help (dependency ratio) is higher in Moldova. Women in Moldova give birth earlier and are more numerous than men, when compared to the EU. Also, life expectancy in Moldova is lower than in the EU, that being due to the lower quality of life.<\/p>\n

The employment rate is lower in the Republic of Moldova than in the EU countries, including the data regarding women. The employment discrepancy is smaller, as well as the general unemployment rate and that among young people. At the same time, fewer women are Members of Parliament (MPs) in Moldova and there is a clear tendency of population employed in agriculture.<\/p>\n

When it comes to the education in Moldova, it can be observed that a lot of young people enrol at universities, but also there is a higher share of people who fail to graduate. What is more, the quality of studies can be questioned when the expenditure on R&D in Moldova was only 0.2% in 2019, as compared to 2.2% in the EU countries.<\/p>\n

An even worse situation is recorded in the area of public health. Despite the fact that there is a higher number of doctors and beds available in hospitals as a total number per 10 thousand inhabitants, Moldova registers a higher mortality rate per 1000 people (3.3\u2030 more than in the EU) and a more than doubled infant mortality rate (5.3\u2030 more than in the EU). Overall, there is a lower number of adults who can say they are in good health, but twice as many people dying in car crashes when compared to the EU. The most representative figure reflecting the real situation of the Moldovan quality of life is the share of population that still doesn’t have a bathroom inside their house (42.2%).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moldova is a country emerging from agrarian to industrialized production, with a focus on services. That can be observed when looking at the growing rate of industrial production in the last years, but also at the still significant rate of agricultural production. The high share of agricultural land demonstrates that the country is still focused on extensive farming, rather than intensive. Moreover, the country has a big deforestation issue.<\/p>\n

There are more and more companies appearing on the market, but still a low number of them are innovative.<\/p>\n

There was a high inflation rate recorded in 2020 (in comparison to 2019), when the pandemic crisis hit the Moldovan economy.<\/p>\n

When it comes to the education in Moldova, it can be observed that a lot of young people enrol at universities, but also there is a higher share of people who fail to graduate. What is more, the quality of studies can be questioned when the expenditure on R&D in Moldova was only 0.2% in 2019, as compared to 2.2% in the EU countries.<\/p>\n

An even worse situation is recorded in the area of public health. Despite the fact that there is a higher number of doctors and beds available in hospitals as a total number per 10 thousand inhabitants, Moldova registers a higher mortality rate per 1000 people (3.3\u2030 more than in the EU) and a more than doubled infant mortality rate (5.3\u2030 more than in the EU). Overall, there is a lower number of adults who can say they are in good health, but twice as many people dying in car crashes when compared to the EU. The most representative figure reflecting the real situation of the Moldovan quality of life is the share of population that still doesn’t have a bathroom inside their house (42.2%).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moldova is a country emerging from agrarian to industrialized production, with a focus on services. That can be observed when looking at the growing rate of industrial production in the last years, but also at the still significant rate of agricultural production. The high share of agricultural land demonstrates that the country is still focused on extensive farming, rather than intensive. Moreover, the country has a big deforestation issue.<\/p>\n

There are more and more companies appearing on the market, but still a low number of them are innovative.<\/p>\n

There was a high inflation rate recorded in 2020 (in comparison to 2019), when the pandemic crisis hit the Moldovan economy.<\/p>\n
