Ilan Sor<\/strong>, former Chairman of the Board\u00a0at\u00a0Banca de Economii (tr. as Saving Bank of Moldova) – an institution that played an important role in the 2014 bank fraud scandal – then Mayor of Orhei and Member of Parliament, businessman and the leader of the Sor Party, which secured the pro-Russian and anti-reformist majority government in Parliament alongside socialists, seem to want to return to Moldova.<\/p>\n

Recently, he announced that he is ready to return the funds imputed to him and to claim them later from the real beneficiaries of the bank fraud.<\/span> “Even though I was not among the beneficiaries of the stolen money and I proved this, I am ready to pay in full the amount of money that law enforcement bodies invoke when bringing legal claims against me. I am ready to guarantee the payment of these financial resources,”<\/em> Sor mentioned during a press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2017, the politician was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, being accused of fraud and money laundering. The judgement was not final though, while the court ordered that the sentence enter into force only after it becomes so. Even though prosecutors demanded serving 19 years in prison, the legal claims brought against Sor were replaced by a milder sentence: causing material damage through deception or breach of trust.<\/em><\/p>\n

Following the court’s decision, the judge who pronounced the sentence started to often travel to Israel, whereas his concubine opened a beauty salon at Chisinau International Airport, directly controlled by the defendant, as a recent investigation<\/a> showed.<\/p>\n

Sor’s criminal case was kept under examination for 3 years thanks to often changing judges and postponed hearings – a fact that helped Sor flee the country when the Government led by Pavel Filip fell in 2019. In July, 2019, the Ministry of Internal Affairs declared that Ilan \u0218or had left the country illegally and that he had been announced internationally wanted. Nowadays, while staying in Tel Aviv, he keeps making populist statements from a safe distance, as well as pumping money in his political party.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the run-up to snap parliamentary elections, Sor declared that he is ready to help finding those who are guilty of the bank fraud and recover stolen money. Trying to negotiate his arrest warrant, the fugitive announced that letters to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the National Bank of Moldova and the Ministry of Finance<\/strong> were sent, regarding his intention to return the money charged to him. He requested the appointment of representatives from each institution, in order to start discussions on the return of the money, calling it “a solution to recover damages from the bank fraud.” <\/em>According to Ilan Sor, the shareholders of the banks involved in the fraud scandal (Banca de Economii, Unibank and Banca Sociala) would be ready to redeem the portfolio of non-performing loans (worth 5.2 million lei), return to the state the damage caused to it, and recover the funds from the real beneficiaries of the robbery of the Moldovan banking system.<\/p>\n

“We shall see if the state authorities really want to return the money, as promised and as citizens expect, or they will continue the show they have been accustomed us to in all these years,” Ilan Sor stated<\/a> on social media.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The politician claimed that if state authorities didn’t do anything so far, they never wanted to recover the money. He probably forgot to mention the number of judges he bribed throughout the last years and the control exercised onto the judiciary first with Plahotniuc’s democrats, then with Dodon’s socialists. Moreover, Ilan Sor declared<\/a> that state authorities could be brought to trial if they refuse his offer. “They have no right to refuse. The shareholders come and say: you have accused us of granting non-performing loans. These loans were not returned. We buy this loan portfolio. This operation is absolutely legal.”<\/em><\/p>\n

At the same time, the leader of the Sor Party states that he is ready to cooperate and testify in court, by revealing the names of the real beneficiaries of the bank fraud, after the “illegal”<\/em> warrant for his arrest is cancelled.<\/p>\n
