President of the Constitutional Court (CC), Domnica Manole<\/strong>, expressed concerns regarding her personal security\u00a0 and a need for personal protection provided by state authorities following threats, attacks on social media, inappropriate statements made by some politicians, pressure put on the institution, but also a bomb threat at CC. All of that mainly happened after the court decided, last week, that the current legislature of the Republic of Moldova can be dissolved. CC judges ascertained that the conditions justifying the dissolution of the Parliament were met, finding<\/a>\u00a0that at least two candidates for prime minister were rejected within a maximum period of 45 days, as well as the Government could not be formed for three months, according to the Article 85 of the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The Secretariat of the Constitutional Court officially asked for providing protection services for the president of CC. The request was addressed to the President’s Office and redirected to the State Protection and Guard Service (SPGS)<\/strong>, an institution subordinated to the president of the country. The representatives of SPGS confirmed that security was granted to Domnica Manole.<\/p>\n

In an recent interview<\/a>, the CC president claimed that she felt like she was in danger – unknown persons were monitoring her home, she was blocked in traffic several times, as well as other strange things happened to her, which she couldn’t reveal yet.<\/p>\n

According to the official, this is the first time in the history of independent Moldova when a president of the Constitutional Court benefits from personal protection<\/span> provided by state authorities. On the other hand though, offering protection to the head of CC is not a new practice in European countries. “We are going through a period when society is divided. Statements of some politicians can negatively influence and determine some of their followers to resort to extreme actions,”<\/em> Domnica Manole stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Socialist MPs announced, last week, that the resignation of three CC judges will be demanded, accusing the magistrates of abuse of power and violation of constitutional law. Socialists declared themselves willing to put on Parliament’s agenda a bill on granting no confidence vote to the 3 judges who made the decision regarding Parliament’s dissolution. Furthermore, the socialists’ leader Igor Dodon speculated<\/a> that granting personal protection to the CC president would be a “reward [from the president] for the favourable decision”.<\/em><\/p>\n

Still, President of the Constitutional Court, Domnica Manole, is entitled to receive security, according to the national legislation, and will do so in order to feel safer while fulfilling her duties. “I have always advocated for the rule of law and for respect for human rights, which are the values I have believed in throughout my career. Any attempt to undermine them determines me to continue to firmly defend the supremacy of the Constitution and the principles of the rule of law,”<\/em> the CC official said<\/a>.<\/p>\n
