President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu<\/strong>, paid an official visit to the Council of Europe (CoE) in Strasbourg. On this occasion, the head of state met with several high-ranking officials: Secretary-General of CoE, Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107<\/strong>, President of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), Hendrik Daems<\/strong>, President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), Robert Spano<\/strong>, Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic<\/strong>, President of the CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Leendert Verbeek<\/strong>, President of the Venice Commission, Gianni Buquicchio <\/strong>and Vice-Governor for Financial Strategy at the Council of Europe Development Bank, Carlo Monticelli<\/strong>,\u00a0 as the President’s Office announced<\/a> previously.<\/p>\n\n[aesop_gallery id=”449345″ revealfx=”off” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

During the meetings with CoE officials, the president discussed about the current political situation in the Republic of Moldova, the challenges to democracy in the country, further steps to overcome the political crisis, and the efforts made to reduce the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The officials also exchanged views on the state of democratic institutions in Moldova, the reform of judiciary, the European integration agenda, the human rights situation in Moldova and its cooperation with ECtHR, as well as the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. Some more specific topics were brought up as well: ratifying the CoE Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, fighting against hate speech, increasing the financial autonomy of local communities and strengthening the capacities of Moldovan city halls.<\/p>\n

The president of the Republic of Moldova participated, together with the Secretary General of the CoE, at the launch of the CoE Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova<\/strong> for the years 2021-2024, which provides assistance in such areas as judiciary reform, fight against corruption, supporting media independence, eliminating discrimination, torture and ill-treatment, combating violence against women and children and strengthening local autonomy. Contributions of 13.7 million euros<\/strong> will be made by CoE Member States, third countries and international organizations in order to put the plan into action.<\/p>\n

Also, on April 19, President Maia Sandu gave a speech during the session of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly: “I am honoured to be elected the President of this country. In truth, recent presidential elections united Moldovans of all ethnicities around a core demand for an accountable, responsive government, which will pursue national, not personal, interests. […] Moldovans of different ages, of different political preferences came together as one nation to demand far-reaching internal transformations, including a serious fight against corruption, judiciary reform, and a clean government which works for the people. And I have this message to all Moldovans – I will do what you have told me to do,”<\/em> Maia Sandu declared<\/a> at the Parliamentary Assembly.<\/p>\n

“State institutions, today, are often unable to deliver quality public services. The economy suffers from monopolies. Some people lose hope in the day of tomorrow, and choose to leave the country in search of a better future.[…] We want better standards of living, access to quality education and healthcare, and better infrastructure. We want a country with a real economy, where foreign and domestic investments feel secure, where there are jobs for all. We want our people to choose to return and live in Moldova – not because they have to, but because they want to.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The president announced that her first priority is to put an end to pervasive corruption. That, the president stated, can be achieved through snap parliamentary elections. “This task cannot be achieved by just one institution, no matter how determined it is. There has to be a common sense of purpose in fighting corruption between the Presidency, the Parliament and the Government.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The second priority mentioned by the head of state is the reform of judiciary. “Everyone in Moldova must know that the state and its judiciary will treat them fairly.”<\/em> As a consequence, “a less corrupt state and an impartial, independent judiciary will create a strong foundation for a functional economy and economic growth.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“By tackling corruption, reforming justice, creating accountability in our public sector and investing in education, healthcare and social protection, we can reconnect our institutions with our people.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Corrupt forces will fight back, because they stand to lose not only their illicit revenues, but also their freedom. But people are determined to fight for change, and count on the support of Moldova\u2019s partners in the Council of Europe. […] Where there is popular will, there is change. Where there is political will, there is genuine reform. It is time for Moldovans to have a decent life, at home. And we will achieve this together – as a nation, as a country. And as a family of nations, united in our desire for democracy and rule of law here, in this key European forum – the Council of Europe,”<\/em> concluded<\/a> the Moldovan official.<\/p>\n
