The second stage of the vaccination campaign was launched in Moldova. People over 60 years old, people with comorbidities, as well as employees of education system and those of structures for ensuring public order, defence and state security can now get vaccinated. Up until now, 57 561<\/strong> jabs were administered in the Republic of Moldova, as a governmental portal announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, only Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca (renamed as Vaxzevria) were used. Additionally, the unit<\/a> responsible for public procurement at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection (MHLSP) are in negotiations directly with COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers, announcing<\/a> about potential procurement of Sinovac vaccine (400 000<\/strong> jabs). MHLSP informed<\/a>, on April 7, about Russia’s readiness to deliver 182 000<\/strong> jabs of Sputnik V vaccine as humanitarian aid, out of which 62 000 doses would be distributed to Transnistria. No other public announcements, containing more details, were made by state authorities yet.<\/p>\n

Still, when it comes to Sputnik V, more and more attempts to politicize its potential arrival to Moldova were made. It seem a good way to increase approval ratings in the event of future elections. Igor Dodon<\/strong>, leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) and former President (currently holding no public office) is one of the politicians who have always exploited the results obtained by state authorities, using them to his own advantage and making promises, especially prior to election campaigning.<\/p>\n

“We discussed the process of purchasing the vaccine with the Russian side. The Government of the Republic of Moldova launched a procurement procedure. We said that the Moldovan side is ready to buy at least 500 thousand jabs of Sputnik V vaccine sourced from the state budget. I believe that other 500 thousand jabs could arrive in May to June, depending on the production capacities of the Russian Federation,”<\/em> stated<\/a> Dodon – a person who is not supposed to make announcements on behalf of the Government or decide the public spending procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n

While representatives of MHLSP mentioned that the date when the Sputnik V vaccine donation (180 000 jabs) would arrive to Moldova is not known yet, the socialist leader stated that they would arrive in April or at the beginning of May. “The rest will be procured later,” <\/em>promised Igor Dodon, without taking into consideration that a vaccine production and procurement process could take some time.<\/p>\n

The Transnistrian leader, Vadim Krasnoselski<\/strong>, also made public announcements regarding the supply of Sputnik V vaccine in the region. Namely, that it would be delivered in two batches: in April – 42 thousand jabs and in May – 20 thousand jabs. “Considering the number of requests related to Sputnik V, I think that the overwhelming majority of Transnistrian residents trust this particular vaccine,”<\/em> he stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since the vaccination campaign started in Transnistria, only Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines were administered, which were shared free of charge with the region’s medical institutions.<\/p>\n

At the end of March, Igor Dodon announced<\/a> his working visit to Moscow to discuss the delivery of the Sputnik V vaccine for the Republic of Moldova. On the same day, Vadim Krasnoselski also went to Moscow. Two weeks earlier, a Tiraspol delegation visited Russia to ask (again) for a vaccine for the Transnistrian region, as the promise for 30 000 doses of Sputnik, which was made at the beginning of the year, wasn’t honoured yet. The Russian authorities never mentioned anything about quantities or delivery dates.<\/p>\n
