“Women of the world want and deserve an equal future free from stigma, stereotypes and violence; a future that\u2019s sustainable, peaceful, with equal rights and opportunities for all.” <\/em>This is how this year’s statement<\/a> of UN Women<\/strong> on International Women’s Day commenced.<\/p>\n

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, talked about the work that still would have to be done. Nowadays, women still remain concentrated in the lowest paid jobs. They are nearly twice as likely than men to lose their jobs during the COVID-19 crisis<\/span>, that leading to an increasing poverty rate among women and, therefore, widening the gender gap, as the\u00a0United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) informed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This year celebration is focused on women’s leadership amid the world recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 22 countries<\/strong> in the world (including Moldova) where women are Heads of State or Government, whereas 24.9% of MPs are women<\/strong>. “At the current rate of progress, gender equality among Heads of Government, for example, will take another 130 years,”<\/em> UN Women representatives stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When it comes to Moldova’s progress in this regard, it is important to mention that not every Moldovan knows that International Women’s Day has nothing in common with Mother’s Day (a tradition promoted during the Soviet Union). A lot of country’s citizens get really confused when hearing the word feminism<\/strong>. For decades, people in Moldova have been celebrating women’s beauty, femininity, ability of giving birth. Some people are still not aware that this day is actually about women’s fight for their rights: the right to vote, to study, to work, to have property, to be socially protected, to hold equal positions and earn equal wages<\/strong>. There are still a lot of families in Moldova where the whole celebration resumes to a bouquet of flowers, a gift and a cooked breakfast as a matter of exception. The next day, everything returns to the existing status quo.<\/p>\n

A recent study<\/a> on gender equality published by “Expert-Group” Independent Analytical Center<\/strong> showed that, throughout life, the average consumption of women is the same as for men, whereas their income is considerably lower. Taking into consideration that women’s life expectancy is about 8 years longer than that of men and that the retirement age is earlier, “women are economically dependent for a longer period of time, thus are at greater risk of poverty.” <\/em><\/p>\n

According to the study, the incomes of men and women in the Republic of Moldova became similar only at the age of 50<\/span>. Between the age of\u00a0 57-66, there is a decrease of women’s income, due to reaching retirement age. After 66 years, both genders reach similar values again. Overall though, women earn less due to several additional causes.<\/p>\n

First, a higher umber of women use to enrol in higher education institutions, that postponing their date of entering the labour market. On the other hand, even though there are more women holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree diploma, that doesn’t ensure a higher or at least equal wages to those of men due to wage discrimination.<\/p>\n

Up to the age of 35, women’s income is influenced by the period of maternity and childcare leave. In urban areas, the employment rate for men with at least one child is 76.2%, while for women it is 41%<\/span>. In rural areas, the gap between men and women is lower – 23.1%, the report<\/a> stated. “Very few men take childcare leave in Moldova. As a result, both partners suffer \u2013 fathers lack a stronger emotional connection with their children, mothers are not able to fully achieve both maternal and professional potential,”<\/em> Deputy Representative of UNFPA Moldova, Natalia Plugaru<\/strong>, stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gender stereotypes, according to which childcare is a primary responsibility of women, rather than men, determines women\u2019s participation in the labor market. 95.7% of household keepers from Moldova are women.<\/span> Oh, right, they are called housewives.<\/p>\n

In 2019, the gap between average wages of men and women was 14.1%<\/span>. “The annual financial loss for women has reached the value of about 17 thousand lei, which means that a woman must work two months longer in order to reach the average annual salary of the man for the previous year. These lifelong financial inequalities contribute to an even greater difference when receiving the retirement pension,”<\/em> claimed<\/a> Tatiana Zatic<\/strong>, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection.<\/p>\n

Still, there are reasons to celebrate as well. In 2020, Moldovan citizens have elected a woman as Head of State for the first time \u2013<\/em> Maia Sandu \u2013<\/em> despite all stigmas and stereotypes existing in the society. “When more women take part in active politics, it is a good sign for democracy, society and the quality of political debates. […] The young generation follows our example. It is our duty to fight for young girls, women and for all European citizens,”<\/em> said<\/a> President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, while addressing Maia Sandu at the European Parliament conference “Women leaders and their role in the democratisation process of their countries”<\/em> in December 2020.<\/p>\n
