The vaccination campaign started in the Republic of Moldova on March 2. At this stage, the immunization of medical staff from intensive care units and COVID-19 centres is ongoing. In the first 2 days, 2 604 out of 21 600<\/strong> <\/span>AstraZeneca vaccine doses donated by the Romanian Government were administered to the medical workers all over the country. Once the vaccination campaign started, geopolitical contradictions began to manifest as well.<\/p>\n

First, the management of several district hospitals from the south of the country sent a notification<\/a> to the National Agency for Public Health<\/strong> (NAPH)<\/strong>, informing that there are no medical workers who would accept to be given the AstraZeneca vaccine<\/span>. “Please do not send the mentioned vaccine to our hospital. In case we have medical workers who want to be vaccinated with this vaccine, we will send you a request indicating how many doses we need,”<\/em> as it is mentioned in the notification. Later on, Head of the District Hospital in Comrat, Nina Railean, claimed that the vaccine wasn’t actually refused and that the immunization process would begin after the medical staff is fully trained, as ZdG reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“There are few who want to get vaccinated. They do not trust this vaccine. We received enough information regarding the vaccines – from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection (MHLSP) and from NAPH. But there is a lot of false information beside that. Even medical workers believe it,”<\/em> Dumitru Guzun, an epidemiologist of the Comrat Public Health Center, Vulcanesti subdivision, added<\/a>. Some medical employees from the south districts confessed they were waiting for Pfizer Biontech or Sputnik V. Thus, they refused the AstraZeneca shot.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Secretary of State at the MHLSP, Tatiana Zatic, stated<\/a> for TVR Moldova that it is too early to talk about doctors’ reluctance. “We are just at the beginning and everyone can change his mind along the way. Every change meets resistance first. Still, public health should be the priority and it is important for every medical worker to be vaccinated.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The National Advisory Committee of Experts on Immunization approved<\/a>, on March 3, 10<\/strong> COVID-19 vaccines to be used in the Republic of Moldova: Pfizer Biontech, AstraZeneca -UK, AstraZeneca \u2013 Sk Bio, AstraZeneca \u2013 SII, Sinopharm, Sinovac, Moderna, Janssen, the Gamaleya National Center (Sputnik V) and CanSinoBio.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Medical workers seem very sceptic when it comes to AstraZeneca or Sputnik-V, even though “there is, basically, no difference between them,”<\/em> as Associate Professor Angela Paraschiv claimed<\/a>. “The only difference between them is that the AstraZeneca vaccine has only one adenovirus that causes infections in chimpanzees, whereas Sputnik V has two human adenoviruses.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A message containing (intentional) disinformation was delivered, today, by the Tiraspol leader Vadim Krasnoselski<\/strong> who stated<\/a> that “a batch of humanitarian aid from the World Health Organization, meaning 1810 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine doses, will arrive in Transnistria.<\/span>“<\/em> He actually referred to the vaccine doses provided by the Romanian Government as a humanitarian aid to the Moldovan citizens, which were distributed to the Transnistrian region as well.<\/p>\n

The Romanian Embassy in the Republic of Moldova<\/strong> made certain clarifications “as a result of\u00a0 controversial information that appeared online.”<\/em> The institution specified<\/a> that the Transnistrian region was allocated 1810 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, along with 100 thousand surgical masks, 10 thousand FFP3 protective masks, 9000 protective suits, 500 pairs of protective footwear and 10 thousand disposable gloves. “Until now, the equipment has not been taken from the specialized warehouse in Chisinau,” <\/em>as it is mentioned in the embassy’s note.<\/p>\n

Generally, Sputnik V starts to become a very exploited political tool used by Moldovan politicians as well. Socialists repeatedly announced<\/a> that Russian authorities are about to donate Sputnik V vaccines doses, even though an official announcement was never made by the Russian side. On the other hand, Presidential Health Adviser, Ala Nemerenco, claimed that Sputnik-V was registered in Moldova with a specific purpose. “A batch of several hundred thousand doses is waiting to receive the import authorization and to be marketed only through private institutions, having to be paid,”<\/em> she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n
