Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador\u00a0Peter Michalko<\/strong>, recently criticised, in an interview<\/a>, the way Moldovan politicians manage the domestic political crisis. The EU official claimed that “It is worrying when people who have been involved in bank fraud are involved in negotiations or the decision-making process regarding the formation of the Government.”<\/em><\/span> He highlighted the fact that Moldova needs a functioning Government and a reliable Parliament by holding snap elections. At the same time, the EU official mentioned the bills voted by the unformalised (at that moment) majority government, which were “controversial and, in many respects, pushed the country back in terms of reforms and commitments taken by the Republic of Moldova regarding its international partners.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The statement of Peter Michalko served as a dynamite fuse, which was quickly ignited by the socialist MPs and the leader of the Sor Party, Ilan Sor.<\/p>\n

“Doesn’t the diplomat, who teaches us how to live according to European rules and standards, know that in Europe there is also the term presumption of innocence? Doesn’t he understand that, by insulting me, he is actually offending 120 thousand citizens who voted for the Sor Party?”<\/em> stated<\/a> Ilan Sor<\/strong>, the fugitive MP who was mentioned in the Kroll report as one of the $1 billion bank fraud beneficiaries, who was sentenced in a first-instance verdict to seven-and-a-half years in jail and whose criminal case trial was postponed for years now. Ilan Sor declared that the EU Delegation to Moldova would like the country’s sovereign decisions to be made in their office<\/span>. “He understands that we will not act in the interests of a self-proclaimed administrator from outside,”<\/em> Sor added.<\/p>\n

“The bills that were adopted, in December 2020, at the initiative of the PSRM correspond to the needs and aspirations of the majority of the population of the Republic of Moldova and our obligations made towards our voters before parliamentary elections,”<\/em> the socialist representatives also reacted in a press release<\/a>. The socialists consider Peter Michalko’s statement “a serious interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state”<\/em> and a violation of the diplomatic etiquette.<\/p>\n

Transparency International – Moldova<\/strong> qualified<\/a> the attack of Ilan Sor as a “rude”<\/em> one. “The arrogance shown by the so-called politician speaks of the impunity provided by the judiciary to the corrupt politicians in this country, removing it from the European path and compromising such values \u200b\u200bas rule of law and justice,”<\/em> it is mentioned in the institution’s statement.<\/p>\n

Moreover, a statement<\/a> of the Ambassador of the European Union and Ambassadors of the EU Member States accredited to the Republic of Moldova was published today, refuting the attacks on Peter Michalko.<\/p>\n

“The EU is engaged in the Republic of Moldova on the basis of our Association Agreement, in a spirit of cooperation and partnership. The Ambassadors of the EU and its Member States observe internal developments with a focus on the compatibility of domestic laws and practices with the Republic of Moldova\u2019s international commitments, including those vis-\u00e0-vis the European Union, in line with their mandates and in full respect of the independence and sovereignty of the Republic<\/span> of Moldova. The EU and its Members States consistently promote good cooperation with the Republic of Moldova, and demonstrate their support including through a large number of projects that deliver tangible benefits to all people in the country.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ilan Sor defended himself by stating that Peter Michalko would have attacked him, not the other way around. “Diplomacy is a talent that not everyone is endowed with. Diplomacy has nothing in common with the premeditated violation of the principles guaranteed by\u00a0 international law. […] If the ambassador forgets his mission and puts his personal sympathies and dislikes above the laws of the host country and international norms, then there are questions about his level of professionalism. It is hard to believe that the European Union needs such a representative, no matter in which country<\/span>,”<\/em> Sor repeatedly attacked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In August 2020, several representatives of the Sor Party organised a protest at the headquarters of the EU diplomatic mission, accusing the EU Ambassador of interfering with the process of justice and asking for his resignation. That time, Peter Michalko expressed<\/a> his perplexity regarding the trial continuous postponements in the criminal case filed against Ilan Sor.<\/p>\n
