Recently, the daily number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases constantly exceeded<\/a> the level of 1000 in Moldova. The last figures for February 19 displayed 1028<\/span> confirmed cases out of 3731 tests that were carried out. That means a positive rate of 27.55% or<\/span> 3.63<\/span> tests conducted per confirmed case. Moldova still doesn’t conduct enough tests, as the WHO suggested<\/a> around 10 \u2013 30 tests per confirmed case<\/strong> as a general benchmark of adequate testing. Neighbouring countries such as Ukraine carried out<\/a> 5 test per confirmed case on February 18, whereas Romania did 8.6 tests per confirmed case on the same date.<\/p>\n

Public health expert, Ala Tocarciuc<\/strong>, believes<\/a> that Moldova never came out of the first pandemic wave, given that the positive rate was never less than 20%<\/span>. Despite the fact that, in January, there were recorded 300-400 confirmed cases per day, the expert said this is still a lot for such a small country.<\/p>\n

Ala Tocarciuc also stated that the spike in the number of confirmed cases could be caused by two virus mutations – the British one, which is 70% more contagious, and the Brazilian mutation, which is three times more contagious. “And another cause, but it is my guess, is that these mutations, which are more contagious, merely affect young people and children. They can be asymptomatic, but may be carriers of the virus in the community,”<\/em> she said<\/a>. The public health expert claimed that the official confirmation of these mutations’ presence in Moldova is needed.<\/p>\n

Ala Halacu<\/strong>, Head of the Public Health Laboratory Diagnostics Department of the National Agency for Public Health (NAPH), informed<\/a> that 20 samples were sent to the Institute of Virology from the Charite University Hospital in Berlin on January 19 in order to detect whether the new British mutation is present in the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n

The increasing number of confirmed cases have been mostly influenced by the fact that, there are still a lot of sceptical and uninformed people in Moldova who don\u2019t comply with the regulations, wear their masks incorrectly and don\u2019t respect social distancing rules in public places. What is more, “poor communication of the Government, rigid budget management, as well as limited measures of economic support have led to a general state of mistrust, which aggravated not only the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, but also reduced the effectiveness of sanitary measures,”<\/em> it is claimed in a study<\/a> conducted by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Moldova (FES).<\/p>\n

As regards the vaccination campaign beginning, President of Moldova, Maia Sandu<\/strong>, announced<\/a> that the arrival of COVID-19 vaccination doses provided through the COVAX platform was postponed until the end of February. Also, 200 000 vaccine doses promised to be donated by the Romanian Government will arrive later, due to some bureaucratic procedures that still need to be completed. “We hope that all bureaucratic issues, especially those related to obtaining the consent of vaccine manufacturers, can be resolved as soon as possible and that we can discuss the start of the vaccination process,”<\/em> declared<\/a> Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, a delegation led by Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, arrived in Chisinau to hand in a donation of medical equipment worth over 2 million euros<\/strong>, including 1.5 million surgical masks, 100 thousand FFP3 masks, 100 thousand protective suits and 100 thousand disposable gloves. Bogdan Aurescu assured that all efforts are being made by Romanian and the EU authorities to bring vaccine doses to Moldova as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

Also yesterday, the WHO representative confirmed<\/a> that the first batch of vaccine through the COVAX platform will arrive in the Republic of Moldova at the end of this month.<\/p>\n
