The score of the Republic of Moldova has slightly improved when compared to 2019 &#8211; 32 points and 2018 &#8211; 33 points, being comparable to that of Philippines (34), Egypt (33), Panama (35), Northern Macedonia (35) or Bosnia and Herzegovina (35). That is while the overall average score is 43\/100.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the top ranking countries were Denmark and New Zealand which recorded a CPI score of 88 points. Syria, Somalia and South Sudan were the countries with the most corrupt systems, having a score of 14, 12 and 12 points respectively.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, nearly half of the countries in the CPI rankings have stagnated for almost a decade, whereas<span style=\"color: #993300;\"> more than 66% of the countries have a CPI score below 50 points. <\/span><em>&#8220;These countries have failed to move the needle in any significant way to improve their score and combat public sector corruption,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>as it is stated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/images.transparencycdn.org\/images\/2020_Report_CPI_EN.pdf\">CPI 2020 report<\/a>. All in all, the year 2020 proved to be one of the worst years in recent history, due to the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating effects.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/images.transparencycdn.org\/images\/2020_Report_CPI_EN.pdf\">report<\/a> showed that the pandemic period has highlighted integrity issues even in the case of the best performing countries, proving that none is immune to corruption. <em>&#8220;The emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed enormous cracks in health systems and democratic institutions, underscoring that those in power or who hold government purse strings often serve their own interests instead of those most vulnerable,&#8221;<\/em> the report said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;COVID-19 is not just a health and economic crisis. It\u2019s a corruption crisis. And one that we\u2019re currently failing to manage,&#8221; claimed Chair of Transparency International, <strong>Delia Ferreira Rubio<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Corruption is prevalent across the COVID-19 response, from bribery for COVID-19 tests, treatment and other health services, to public procurement of medical supplies and overall emergency preparedness,&#8221;<\/em> it is also declared in the CPI 2020 report.<\/p>\n<p>As a general observation, countries with higher levels of corruption, no matter how developed they are, tend to spend less on healthcare. Also, <span style=\"color: #993300;\">the higher the level of corruption is, the more common are democratic violations in response to COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Moldova in the CPI 2020 ranking<\/h3>\n<p>According to <strong>Transparency International Moldova<\/strong>, the year 2020 was a very controversial one for the Republic of Moldova when it comes to fighting corruption. <em>&#8220;On the one hand, the country has emerged from the &#8216;strain&#8217; of a captured state. Parliament offered the citizens &#8216;a Christmas surprise&#8217;, adopting a series of bills contrary to the public interest,&#8221;<\/em> as it is mentioned in the organisation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparency.md\/2021\/01\/28\/indicele-perceptiei-coruptiei-2020-coruptia-generalizata-slabeste-raspunsul-la-covid-19-si-pune-sub-pericol-restabilirea-globala-dupa-criza\/\">analysis<\/a>.
