The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu<\/strong>, began her official visit to Brussels today, as the webpage of the Presidency of Moldova informed<\/a>. First of all, the head of state met with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“For us, the European integration is not an abstract term – it is a plan to build a state with functional, strong institutions and to improve the situation in the country through concrete cooperation projects,”<\/em> said President Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

Among the topics covered in the discussion with the European official were a faster access to Covid-19 vaccines for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, the need to provide the healthcare system with protective equipment, the importance of financial assistance in the coming years, the role of the Eastern Partnership for Moldova’s closeness to European values \u200b\u200band standards, as well as the plight of small and medium-sized enterprises and farmers as a result of last year’s pandemic and drought<\/strong>, along with the possibilities of their assistance.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan president highlighted her certainty that after holding snap parliamentary elections and creating a functioning government it would be possible to implement the reforms that have been planned. “Cooperation with the EU is essential for our country, both in terms of strengthening institutions and in mitigating the effects of the economic crisis,”<\/em> added<\/a> Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

During her official visit to Brussels scheduled for January 18-19, President Maia Sandu met with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell Fontelles as well.<\/p>\n

“I reiterated that the Republic of Moldova wants to intensify cooperation with the EU in the field of foreign policy and I addressed, in this context, the ways of more active cooperation on the national and regional security agenda. The biggest threat to the Republic of Moldova and its national interest is corruption, judicial reform being the only way to ensure the long-term well-being and security of citizens,”<\/em> claimed<\/a> Maia Sandu after the meeting with the EU official.<\/p>\n

Josep Borrell Fontelles assured President Maia Sandu of all his support for the Republic of Moldova and for the country’s citizens. In her turn, the Moldovan president invited the high-ranking EU official to pay an official visit to Chisinau.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan president also announced<\/a> her today’s meetings with European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis and European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn.<\/p>\n
