On January 12, President Maia Sandu<\/strong> had a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong>, in Kyiv, where the Moldovan head of state paid an official visit, as it was mentioned on the Presidency’s page<\/a>. The two officials signed several Moldovan-Ukrainian bilateral documents and agreed to establish a Council of Presidents of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine<\/span>, aiming to resolve the issues on the bilateral agenda.<\/p>\n

“We want to be more than neighbours, we want to be friends who act on the basis of a strategic partnership.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“We agreed to start a new chapter in both bilateral relations and our common aspirations for European integration. Our cooperation will be based on discussing and solving existing problems, but also on jointly exploring new opportunities in the interest of the citizens of both states,”<\/em> stated<\/a> President Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

Presidents Maia Sandu and Volodymyr Zelenskyy also agreed to make joint efforts to ensure border security, declaring mutual support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine within the internationally recognized borders.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We decided to accelerate the agreement that would allow citizens of both states to cross the border only on the basis of identity card,”<\/em> the Moldovan official added.<\/p>\n

Other topics discussed at the common meeting include the need to diversify energy sources, water supply of localities on both banks of the Dniester River, as well as the development of road infrastructure in order to ensure the fastest route between the capitals of the two states. “We discussed the rights of minorities in Ukraine. We did not avoid the problematic aspects that have been frozen for many years. We agreed on activating expert groups to solve problems. A special topic was the strategic objective of the EU integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,”<\/em> said Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a\u00a0press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“We have many common problems to solve and we are sure that today’s meeting lays the foundations for a long-term strategic cooperation between our states,”<\/em> Maia Sandu claimed.<\/p>\n

Also, President Maia Sandu had a meeting with the President of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov<\/strong>. “We hope to have a functioning parliament soon, which will reset Moldovan-Ukrainian relations at the parliamentary level. We have many common problems that need to be solved, as well as many opportunities for cooperation. A functional, representative parliament is a key institution, an indispensable pillar to make the most of this strategic partnership,”<\/em> wrote<\/a> Maia Sandu on social media after the meeting with the Ukrainian official.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan president had a meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal<\/strong>. “We discussed improving infrastructure and intensifying economic exchanges, fighting corruption and smuggling, common border control, the worrying ecological situation of the Dniester River, energy security, the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, even though Moldova is currently administered by an incumbent government,”<\/em> said<\/a> Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n
