{"id":449114,"date":"2021-01-06T17:05:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-06T17:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.moldova.org\/en\/?p=449114"},"modified":"2021-01-06T17:09:05","modified_gmt":"2021-01-06T17:09:05","slug":"study-media-perception-in-the-republic-of-moldova","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moldova.org\/en\/study-media-perception-in-the-republic-of-moldova\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Media perception in the Republic of Moldova"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The perception of the Moldovan media was assessed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/internews.md\/publicatii\/INTERNEWS_Final%20report_24.11.20_RO.pdf\">study<\/a> conducted by <strong>Magenta Consulting<\/strong>, with the support of USAID, the British Embassy to Moldova, Internews in Moldova, being co-funded by the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>A report based on the study results was recently published, aiming at assessing <strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">the perception of the media and media skills among citizen from the Republic of Moldova<\/span><\/strong> in 2020, while comparing the dynamics to the first similar report from 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The most relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/internews.md\/publicatii\/INTERNEWS_Final%20report_24.11.20_RO.pdf\">study<\/a> findings were reported as following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>60%<\/strong> of respondents feel that they are informed about what is generally happening in Republic of Moldova;<\/li>\n<li><strong>42%<\/strong> of respondents said they are satisfied with the media in Republic of Moldova;<\/li>\n<li>About<strong> 65%<\/strong> of participants totally agree that being able to distinguish verified news from fake news is a critical matter;<\/li>\n<li><strong>18%<\/strong> of respondents said they follow news only from independent sources, whereas <strong>38%<\/strong> said they follow news, but are not sure which sources are independent;<\/li>\n<li><strong>59%<\/strong> of respondents claimed it is easy to tell when the media sources are manipulative and false.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Moldovan public expressed its need for information coming from trusted sources. However, not all survey participants were able to say which is an independent outlet and which is not, or what information is manipulative (or not). The current study included a test for its respondents where they were asked to rate several news items and identify which of them contained false information. The results&#8217; analysis revealed that only <span style=\"color: #993300;\">8% of respondents were able to correctly identify all fake news from the provided list<\/span>. At the same time, 91% of respondents provided a correct answer for at least one presented item.<\/p>\n<p>Only 24% of study respondents said they were aware about the possibility of reporting or writing an official complaint when identifying fake, offensive or discriminatory content. 38% of them consider the police to be the institution where they can address such a complaint. Others named Audiovisual Council and Press Council as such institutions. Still, the share of people who didn\u2019t know where to report fake or offensive news dropped from 41% to 14%, when compared to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Television still remains the most popular source of information for the majority of Moldovans (58%), being followed by social networks &#8211; 42% of respondents declared they use social media to get access to the latest news. About 95% of respondents have a working TV at home. Also, 74% of them have Wi-Fi or wired internet and, surprisingly, 10% of respondents said they even listen to podcasts &#8211; one of the newest forms of sharing media content.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the media distrust declined when compared to the 2018 figures: 35% in 2020 against 44% in 2018. More people check multiple media sources in order to compare the same piece of information (56% in 2020, as compared to 47% in 2018).<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to international media, the public&#8217;s opinion is quite disproportionate.
