Mark Verlan was an eccentric, contemporary, multidimensional artists from Moldova who painted, sculpted, created installations and wrote texts. His ideas took different, unpredictable and experimental forms. “His artwork is difficult to explain as it is an almost paradoxical mixture of conceptualism, performance, postmodernism, na\u00efve art and surrealism,” <\/em>as it was mentioned in the description of Verlan’s recently opened VR exhibition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The VR exhibition includes 27 works by Mark Verlan<\/span>, being the only virtual gallery in Romania and the Republic of Moldova at the moment.<\/p>\n

The artist used to call himself “Marioca, son of rain”<\/em>, as his passport name was Marian, his nickname at school was Marioca and he had a childhood story: “I was 12 when I was smoking with my sister under a large tree trunk, near my grandmother’s house, in western Ukraine. A loud thunderclap erupted, it suddenly started to rain and something happened in my brain. I realized that I would never be a combine driver, electrician, military or cosmonaut. I will have an art-related occupation. […] The “son of rain” is an allegory, because, in a way, I was born in the rain,”<\/em> the artist claimed in an interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mark Verlan reflected post-Soviet changes and realities in a playful and sarcastic manner. He made art from found objects, to which he gave unexpected meanings. The most common characters in his works were women, cats, Lenin and Buratino (the Russian version of Pinocchio). His artwork contains irony and humour, mostly hiding strong political messages. “Actually, his fairy and ironic artworks are broadcasting the general social subtext, making his characters be in a constant movement and interacting with the public,”<\/em> it is said in the description of Verlan’s VR exhibition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2003, Verlan participated in the exhibition “Blut und Honig”<\/strong>, from The Essl Collection (Vienna), being curated by Herald Szeemann. In 2011, he represented the Republic of Moldova at the Venice Art Biennale<\/strong>, where he exhibited the door of his creative atelier, dressed in a handful of slippers, to symbolically show his willingness to open the gate to Transnistria. The work generated a great scandal.<\/p>\n

He also participated in different exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Italy, Moldova, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden and the USA.
