On December 31, President Maia Sandu announced<\/a> that a decree was signed, appointing Aurel Ciocoi <\/strong>– who previously was Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration – as Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

“Given that the resigning Prime Minister Ion Chicu refused to provide the interim until the appointment of a new Government, President had to choose an Acting Prime Minister from the ministers in office, according to the Constitution. I signed the decree appointing as Acting Prime Minister Mr. Aurel Ciocoi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration,”<\/em> said<\/a> Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

As following, Aurel Ciocoi declared<\/a> that the president’s invitation was accepted, claiming that he will do everything for the Government to work well in the interest of the citizens and that he will soon inform the public opinion about the immediate actions to be taken.<\/p>\n

“The Republic of Moldova is going through a difficult period, with several overlapping crises. I understand the complexity of the situation and the need for the country to be governed effectively regardless of the political situation. In this regard, even if I am still in self-isolation at home, I accept the proposal of President Maia Sandu to take up the interim position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova,”<\/em> stated Acting Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

On December 31, former Prime Minister Ion Chicu, together with Minister of Finance, Serghei Pu\u0219cu\u021ba, Minister of Economy, Anatol Usatii, and Minister of Health, Labour and Social Protection, Viorica Dumbr\u0103veanu, held their last press conference<\/a> while being in office.<\/p>\n

The officials announced their departure after Ion Chicu’s resignation announcement. Still, according to the law, they were supposed to fulfil their tasks as acting ministers until a new Government is appointed. The departure of key position ministers in the midst of the pandemic was called coward and irresponsible by President Maia Sandu.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aureliu Ciocoi is a former journalist and diplomat. In recent years, he held twice the position of adviser to President Igor Dodon and that of Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, as ZdG informed<\/a>. Also, he previously held the position of Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the USA, Germany, China and Denmark and worked as a journalist in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n
