The Transnistrian leader, Vadim Krasnoselski<\/strong>, declared<\/a> last week for the local media, that the region’s authorities are ready for any format of dialogue with the new President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cOur position remains the same. We are ready for dialogue. Both in the 1 + 1 and 5 + 2 formats. We remain faithful to the principles of good-neighbourliness, cooperation and negotiability,”<\/em> Krasnoselski stated after the new Moldovan president was appointed.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Transnistrian leadership insisted on the presence of Russian peacekeepers in the region. According to Vadim Krasnoselski, this is the foundation, thanks to which negotiations are possible.<\/p>\n

“Peacekeepers cannot be withdrawn without Russian help, but even without the people of Transnistria they cannot be withdrawn. We remain devoted to the Russian peacekeepers and we understand and remember who brought peace to our land.<\/span> We remember how it was and we have no doubts that here the peacekeepers are the guarantor of peace for both Transnistria and Moldova.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He considers that talking about peacekeepers is a way of political advertising for the President of the Republic of Moldova. “Sometimes I get the impression that when a politician wants to draw attention to himself, so that everyone can talk about him, he is talking about peacekeepers,”<\/em> said<\/a> Krasnoselski.<\/p>\n

The head of the region also commented on the unwillingness of Maia Sandu to meet with him: “It’s one thing when such statements are made while still being in opposition, another thing is when the current president makes them. These are different degrees of responsibility. Therefore, there is no need to draw any conclusions now,”<\/em> the Transnistrian leader concluded<\/a>.<\/p>\n

President Maia Sandu\u00a0declared, during a\u00a0press conference<\/a> on November 30, that there is no agreement <\/span><\/strong>signed by the Republic of Moldova to allow the stationing of the Operational Group of Russian Forces in the Transnistrian region, emphasizing the necessity of withdrawing the foreign military troops and the adjacent ammunition.<\/p>\n

Several Russian officials criticised her statements, explaining why it would be so important to keep the troops in Transnistria.<\/p>\n

Later on, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin<\/strong> publicly acknowledged<\/a> that Russian troops must be withdrawn from Transnistria, but only under certain conditions<\/span>, mostly referring to the federalization solution. “We have been hearing urges from Western countries for a long time to withdraw our peacekeeping troops. We agree to do that, but when the context is right, as soon as a normal dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol is established, when everyone will choose the path of peace and understanding. […] We were very close to do that with President Voronin, but Western representatives put pressure and he rejected the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, which was postponed indefinitely,”<\/em> Putin stated<\/a> in a press conference.<\/p>\n

President Maia Sandu expressed her position regarding the federalization solution as well. She declared in an interview for an Ukrainian media outlet<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0the federalization of the Republic of Moldova as a way to resolve the Transnistrian conflict wouldn\u2019t be accepted.<\/p>\n

In an online\u00a0press conference<\/a>\u00a0held by NATO Secretary General,\u00a0Jens Stoltenberg<\/strong>, he claimed that NATO Allies support strongly the territorial integrity and the independence of Moldova. “We see how Russia has deployed troops in violation of the wishes of different governments in our close neighbourhood, how Russia has illegally annexed Crimea, how they continue to destabilise eastern Ukraine, how there are Russian troops in parts of Georgia, and also how there are troops in Moldova, in Transnistria. This is a violation of the territorial integrity of Moldova and is yet another example of how Russia far too often does not respect international law and the territorial integrity of countries, including Moldova,”<\/em> as it was mentioned in the statement<\/a> of the NATO representative.<\/p>\n
