The World Bank <\/strong>(WB)\u00a0issued an official statement today, expressing its deep concern about the adoption by the Parliament of Moldova of a series of laws “that would reverse the hard-earned progress made in recent years on pension adequacy and sustainability, the effectiveness of Moldova\u2019s asset declaration regime in ending impunity for corruption violations, and the soundness of the financial sector,”<\/em> as it is mentioned in the statement<\/a> of the institution.<\/p>\n

The financial institution specifically referred to 3 such controversial laws. First, when it comes to lowering the retirement age, the WB representatives said it would “weaken the sustainability of the pension system and result in smaller pensions for everyone, especially for women.”<\/em> This could mean fewer funds directed to priority areas, such as health, education and infrastructure, they claimed.<\/p>\n

“The amendments to the asset declaration legislation undermine the verification of asset declarations and make imposing disciplinary sanctions for integrity violations nearly impossible. A critical tool for ensuring accountability for corruption has been greatly weakened,”<\/em> the World Bank\u00a0commented on another Parliament’s decision.<\/p>\n

What’s more, repealing the ‘billion law’ “raises concerns about the National Bank of Moldova\u2019s ability to effectively support macroeconomic and financial stability, essential for the welfare of Moldova\u2019s citizens,”<\/em> it is concluded in the World Bank statement.<\/p>\n

On top of that, incumbent President Igor Dodon<\/strong> signed the promulgation of budget and fiscal policy law for 2021 – a law which was extensively criticised by the civil society, opposition parties and experts. According to the declarations<\/a> of MP Radu Marian, the deputies forming the government shared the money among themselves, taking into consideration political preferences only, at the meeting of the Economy, Budget and Finance Commission, where the opposition parties were not invited and no official records were made.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of laws adopted on December 16, protests of farmers and carriers representatives are being organised for several days. Another protest was announced for tomorrow, where farmers’ tractors will be joined by hundreds of carriers’ minibuses in front of Parliament.<\/p>\n
