On December 8, the 2020 Moldovan European Integration Forum<\/a> was started by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation<\/strong> (FES) and the Foreign Policy Association<\/strong> (FPA) in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration<\/strong> of the Republic of Moldova. The forum is one of the most important discussion platforms where current topics on the country’s European path are addressed, as the Foreign Policy Association informed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, Peter Michalko<\/strong>, criticised the way the European integration agenda is managed: “I thought that, the worst moment in the relationship between the Republic of Moldova and the EU was in 2018. It seems though, that great efforts are currently being made by a certain part of politicians to reach an even worse situation than back then.<\/span> In 2018, the EU reacted very sharply. Now, there is a risk of fatigue, especially when we see the same harmful figures from the past and that the implemented reforms risk being thrown in the trash,”<\/em> said Peter Michalko.<\/p>\n

The official expressed his disappointment regarding the fact that certain “windows of opportunity – moments of recovery of people’s hope that positive changes are possible”<\/em> were missed in the Republic of Moldova. “The practices that I thought were left behind are being brought back – forcible entry into institutions, the use of courts for non-transparent transactions, high-level impunity. In addition to the famous “bank fraud” and laundromat, my deep disappointment is related to the way in which the case of\u00a0 Turkish teachers expulsion was treated – the case that showed that the law in the Republic of Moldova is not higher than verbal instructions,”<\/em> claimed Head of the EU Delegation.<\/p>\n

Still, Peter Michalko emphasised that hate speech and geopolitical matters do not influence people as much as in the past, while “fight against corruption, rising living standards and the future of children seem to matter more.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Regardless of ethnicity, people are beginning to understand that their goal is a better future and a country where they can feel free and prosperous, where they can rely on the judiciary. The positive aspects are stronger than the negative ones. The are tens of thousands of positive people and units of those who anchor the country in poverty and corruption. The stronger the voice of the former, the less the power of oligarchs and corrupt politicians. The EU will continue to be with you. “<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nils Schmid<\/strong>, Member of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, declared that a national consensus is needed in Moldova regarding the European integration. “EU support aimed at improving the lives of common people. It is good that many people voted not geopolitically, but for economic reasons in the last election. Europe must perform in the real life of Moldovans and show that European values \u200b\u200bmatter and that they improve living standards. A strong parliament is needed for reforms. Parliament must be part of the process of separation of powers and work effectively,”<\/em> claimed<\/a> the official during the forum.<\/p>\n
