The economic expert Veaceslav Ionita\u00a0<\/strong>has presented<\/a> several important conclusions after analysing the results of an socio-economic research conducted at the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives (IDSI) “Viitorul<\/a>“, together with the Center for Sociological Research and Marketing CBX-AXA.<\/p>\n

The results showed that 17.9% of Moldovans intend to go abroad for work in the next 6 months<\/strong>,<\/span> that meaning 35-40 thousand people will leave the country. The figure is similar to the last year’s one, when more than 36 thousand citizens left Moldova (17.8%). In 2018, about 20.2% of the population said they intended to go abroad in the next half a year, while this share was 15.8% in 2017. Therefore, one could conclude that Moldova undergoes a prolonged period of massive emigration, as 18% of its population, on average, declare they are willing to leave for work or for residing another country in the long run.<\/p>\n

According to the economic expert, the highest share of persons who showed their intention of departure is represented by citizens with high incomes<\/span>. Basically, every 4th wealthy Moldovan intends to move abroad in the coming months. “First, people left being driven by poverty. Nowadays, rich people leave for a better life. People with higher incomes, businesses set up, houses, cars and everything necessary for a decent living decide to go abroad because they understand that their own well-being is not enough for having a high quality of life,”<\/em> said Veaceslav Ionita.<\/p>\n

As the expert said, “this is the main reason for emigration among rich people – the desire to improve their quality of life, which does not depend on their material well-being, but on the public services provided by the state.” <\/em>Usually, these are people that intend to move to another country for a long period of time, taking their families with them.<\/p>\n

At the same time, only 13.1% of people who are neither rich enough, nor poor enough announced their departure intention. “They are not poor enough to be motivated to leave, but neither are they rich enough to have higher aspirations for quality of life. In short, they are prisoners of their own satisfactory well-being,”<\/em> the expert claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When looking at the age groups,\u00a0young people from rural areas have the highest intention of migrating<\/span> (36.5%). This can be explained by the low standards of living, low wages and lack of opportunities in rural areas of the Republic of Moldova. People who are employed in the rural areas also intend to go abroad in the next six months (19.1% as compared to 17.3% of those who are unemployed). This category of population usually goes abroad for work and they don’t necessarily take their whole families with them, as they intend to come back in a while.<\/p>\n

The net salary in the Republic of Moldova was 6600 lei in 2020. Moldovan citizens said that only a net salary starting from 13 450 lei would motivate them to stay in the country and not to leave, according to another study<\/a> conducted at the same organisations.<\/p>\n
