The Transnistrian conflict settlement has been always a high priority topic on the agenda of the Moldovan presidents, or, at least, it was supposed to be so.<\/p>\n

President-elect Maia Sandu<\/strong> has expressed her position regarding this topic. Recently, she declared in an interview for an Ukrainian media outlet<\/a> that the federalization of the Republic of Moldova as a way to resolve the Transnistrian conflict wouldn’t be accepted<\/span>. Also, Sandu pleaded for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria. “I am convinced that we will find a format for resolving the conflict. This must include the full evacuation of Russian troops from the territory of the Republic of Moldova,”<\/em> said the president-elect.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the official claimed that the conflict solution must be peaceful and based on an action plan developed by the Republic of Moldova. “It must be an action plan developed in Moldova, coordinated with all political forces and society. I understand that this is a very difficult task, but there is no such thing as a simple solution,”<\/em> Sandu said.<\/p>\n

Still, Elena Panina<\/strong>, a member of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian State Duma, considers that the president-elect statement about the need to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria will never be accepted in Tiraspol.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sandu wants the (Russian \u2013 ed.) Peacekeepers to leave (from Transnistria \u2013 ed.) And, at the same time, she rejects the federalization scenario, which can help to ensure a balance of interests and long-term peace. What is offered to the residents of Transnistria in return? […] There is a prospect of ‘unfreezing’ followed by entering the ‘hot phase’, no matter what Sandu says about her desire to resolve the matter peacefully,” Panina said<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On the other hand, current President Igor Dodon<\/strong> suggested that Maia Sandu should pay more attention to the statements she makes regarding the country’s international partners. “It will be difficult for her to promote a balanced foreign policy as I have promoted, not to make harsh statements against Russia and the Transnistrian peacekeepers. […] Often large foreign partners try to convince small countries to be on their side in the big fight against the opponent. May the Lord not allow Moldova to start aligning itself with sanctions against Russia. We will not allow such a thing in the Government. Wise politicians understand that. We have to be friends with everyone,”<\/em> Dodon stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Former member of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) from Moldova, Ion Leahu<\/strong>, believes that there will be no obvious changes in resolving the Transnistrian conflict in the nearest future, as there is a hostile to this idea parliamentary majority and a not interested Government. “It will be a long time before the president has the opportunity to work with an honest Government or Parliament in this regard,”<\/em> Leahu said.<\/p>\n

Moreover,\u00a0“the Russian Federation has so far come only with proposals that could not be accepted, in fact not aimed at solving the Transnistrian problem,” <\/em>as he stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Moscow is very interested in the status quo and will be very interested in Chisinau’s commitment to repay Moscow’s $ 7 billion ‘gas debt’, which was guaranteed back in the 1990s. Maia Sandu, who is an economist, will find the solution to prove that Chisinau does not owe anything to Moscow and that the money must be returned by Tiraspol.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The expert regards federalization as no possible solution “because the separatist region does not meet the conditions for such a process.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On November 29, representatives to the supreme and local councils, heads of villages and settlements will be elected in Transnistria. Therefore, it was announced<\/a> that the Transnistrian authorities will open the borders<\/em> on that day for the inhabitants of the region who are temporarily residing abroad<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of this week, there were 2 271 persons infected with COVID-19 treated in Transnistrian coronavirus centres, including 37 serious or critical cases. 1 827 persons are in self isolation at home, while 7 153 people have recovered.<\/p>\n
