The citizens of the Republic of Moldova voted yesterday in the second round of presidential elections. After processing 100% of minutes (2143 minutes out of 2143), it became official – Maia Sandu is the newly elected president of Moldova<\/strong><\/span>. She won the election with 57.75% of votes, according to the results presented<\/a> by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Maia Sandu won the ballot with a record number of votes when it comes to absolute figures, said<\/a>\u00a0iData. “No party or politician has so far obtained more votes than Maia Sandu in an electoral competition,”<\/em> said Mihai Bologan, Head of iData – Intelligent Data.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to preliminary figures, 1 650 131 voters<\/strong> participated in the second round of presidential elections, that meaning a total voter turnout<\/a> of 52.78%.<\/p>\n

Of the number of voters who exercised their right to vote on the territory of the country, 8, 44% were aged 18-25; 24.58% – 26-40 years old, 24.78% – 41-55 years old, 31.93% – 56-70 years old and a share of 10.27% was represented by the electorate over 71 years old.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a new record was reached by the Moldovan diaspora. 262 739 Moldovans<\/strong> from abroad participated in the voting process – about 16% of the total voter turnout. Most of the participating voters residing abroad are aged below 40 years old – 64.74%.<\/p>\n

The Promo-LEX Observation Mission (OM), received<\/a>\u00a0543 <\/strong>incident reports from observers yesterday by 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

327 of them were already processed, they including intimidation of observers or restriction of free observation in the polling station, temporary limitation of access to TV and internet provided by Moldtelecom (the main provider in Moldova) after 7:00 p.m. in several regions, unjustified presence of unauthorised people inside or within 100 m from the polling station, rumours, attempts and situations of bribing in order to influence voters’ opinion, organised voter transportation, presence of advertising materials, electoral billboards and posters in the vicinity of the polling station, electioneering or black PR, deficiencies in the list of voters, taking pictures of the ballot papers and other violations of the secret ballot.<\/p>\n

The Central Electoral Commission has 5 days to issue a report summarizing the election, Afterwards, within 3 days from the date of its signing, it will present a report on the results of the presidential election to the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n

Maia Sandu<\/strong> thanked the Moldovan electorate in a press conference<\/a>: “Thank you for voting. I promise to cherish your trust. Your solidarity amazed an entire world yesterday. This victory is yours. People voted for a country that can unite them. From now on, we will go together. […] I feel that high expectations are connected to me and I have an enormous responsibility,”<\/em> mentioned Sandu.<\/p>\n

Igor Dodon<\/strong> urged everyone to stay calm, mentioning that he definitely does not call for protests. At the same time, he said his election staff had found several violations, including blocking the right to vote of citizens on the left bank of the Dniester and organizing the transportation of voters from EU member states. “I received hundreds and thousands of messages from citizens who asked me, with tears in their eyes, to not allow those who defrauded the election escape and to contest the results. I preliminarily congratulate Maia Sandu, but I am obliged to defend the votes of my electorate through legal means: the CEC, trial, Constitutional Court,”<\/em> said Dodon during his own press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

International leaders have already congratulated Maia Sandu on her victory. Messages from the presidents of Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Poland arrived.<\/p>\n
