On November 1, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will elect a new president of the country. During the current election campaign, various ways of organizing efforts in order to influence voters&#8217; decision-making were used. Some of them were classic, others quite <em>original <\/em>for a small post-soviet country ruled by merely the same kind of politicians and influenced by the same outside powers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Political shows and news on TV<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Owning politically affiliated TV channels, which could sing the praises of the <em>right<\/em> candidate is an old method widely used by Moldovan politicians. The rule is simple &#8211; <span style=\"color: #993300;\">the more TV stations one has, the larger audience he can reach<\/span>. Everyone has a TV set in Moldova. A family may not have enough money for a new laptop for their children&#8217;s education, for new books or for contracting an internet provider, but still there could be a TV set in their house.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 4th <a href=\"http:\/\/media-azi.md\/ro\/publicatii\/monitorizarea-mass-mediei-%C3%AEn-perioada-electoral%C4%83-%C8%99i-campania-electoral%C4%83-pentru-alegeril-2\">monitoring report<\/a> launched by the<strong> Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ)<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #993300;\">4 out of 10 monitored TV channels with large audiences massively favour certain electoral candidates<\/span> for weeks of the election campaign. In most cases, the so-called independent candidate <strong>Igor Dodon<\/strong> or the Sor Party candidate <strong>Violeta Ivanov<\/strong> were reflected in extensive news that presented their activity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>\u00a0Local visits<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another very efficient way that works with the Moldovan electorate is paying visits to localities and giving speeches. This method can provide a direct contact with people in order to gain their trust. Well, of only we didn&#8217;t have COVID-19. Nowadays, such gatherings are a very efficient way of spreading the virus as well, as very many voters still are reluctant to wearing masks and keep social distance. Not to mention the dangerous cases when running in the elections candidates take off their masks in order to greet the public or shake hands.<\/p>\n<p>Things can get even worse if a second candidate came uninvited to meet the first one and to call for public debates. Than can cause conflicts and altercations, than meaning an even closer contact of a group of people. This time, <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> openly expressed his hopes that Igor Dodon would be re-elected, reminding that the economy of the Republic of Moldova would be highly dependent on that of Russia, as nowhere else Moldovan products would be bought. That is while the official data show that <span style=\"color: #993300;\">65% of Moldova&#8217;s exports are currently targeting the European Union<\/span>. Romania was the most important trading partner of Moldova in 2019, not Russia.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We hope a lot that, in the upcoming elections, Moldovan people will appreciate the efforts made by the current President to bring the Republic of Moldova closer to Russia,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/politika\/9793193\">said<\/a> Putin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>warm<\/em> relation the current president of Moldova has with Russian officials, as well as his geopolitical preferences are not new to the Moldovan public. Still, only recently an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rise.md\/articol\/presedintele-inteligentei-ruse\/\">investigation performed by Rise.md revealed<\/a> that Igor Dodon would have reported, in the last 5 years, to a subdivision within the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, which is in charge with supervising the Moldovan politics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rise.md\/articol\/portrete-la-kremlin\/\">creating profiles for each of election candidates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>A lot of incomes, no expenses<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another typical phenomenon for the election campaign in Moldova, that was also highlighted in a recent TV8<a href=\"https:\/\/tv8.md\/2020\/10\/19\/video-investigatie-deputati-maturatori-lucratori-medicali-si-chiar-preoti-cine-sunt-sponsorii-generosi-ai-candidatilor-la-sefia-statului\/\">\u00a0investigation<\/a>, is the strategy of masking the illegal financing of election campaign activities by declaring them as sponsorship. Problem is that <strong>Renato Usatii<\/strong>, is not very trustworthy when reporting that more than 6 million lei have been raised from donations of individuals only. Especially when these individuals are drivers, guards, housekeepers or sweeper that can earn only a close to minimum wage in Moldova. Also, the candidate <strong>Igor Dodon<\/strong> can not be trusted when district presidents and vice-presidents, district and local councillors donate large sums of money. Even the advisers of the socialist Members of Parliament (MPs) use to donate more than the socialist MPs themselves. But that only on paper.<\/p>\n<p>The situation gets even more hilarious with the very small or almost inexistent expenses of some candidates in the election campaign. Almost all candidates do not report all their expenses while campaigning. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/promolex.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RAPORT-nr.-4_MO-Promo-LEX_APr_2020.pdf\">4th report<\/a> of the <strong>Promo-LEX Observation Mission, 809 477 lei<\/strong> was the total estimated amount of\u00a0 expenses that were not reported by the candidates between October 2-9 only.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Manipulation with basic needs and values<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a strategy adopted, in particular, by the candidates that are lucky enough to be in power, as they manage to create the false impression that <em>&#8220;good things happen thanks to them&#8221;<\/em>. As the current president of the Republic of Moldova announced during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdg.md\/stiri\/in-ajun-de-alegeri-gazul-se-ieftineste-cu-122-anre-a-publicat-noile-tarife\/\">interview<\/a> that the gas will be cheaper, people should not wonder who should be voted because gas price was reduced by 12.2%.
