Chisinau has recently become part of the the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC)<\/strong>, according to an announcement<\/a> made by the City Hall representatives yesterday. “These cities are outstanding examples of how lifelong learning can become a reality at local level. They have proven that effective lifelong learning policies and practices can support the development of inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and contribute to the 2030 Agenda,”<\/em> it is mentioned on the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) official page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Altogether, 54 new cities from 27 countries<\/strong> are mentioned as joining the network, that bringing the total number of cities within the UNESCO GNLC to 229 in 64 countries.<\/p>\n

In order to become a member of the UNESCO GNLC, potential member cities have to be nominated by the National Commission for UNESCO in that specific country, as well as a strong commitment to lifelong learning by the mayor and city administration, and a clear vision for providing lifelong learning opportunities for everyone in the community, are necessary. “Once admitted, cities are expected to take part in the activities of the network and to produce a biennial report outlining their achievements as learning cities,”<\/em> as it is explained on the UIL page.<\/p>\n

“While national governments are largely responsible for creating strategies for building learning societies, lasting change requires commitment at the local level. A learning society must be built province by province, city by city, and community by community.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All new member cities have been welcomed by the UIL Director David Atchoarena<\/strong>: “I warmly welcome the new members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and very much look forward to working with them on further advancing our goal of ensuring lifelong learning for all.”<\/em><\/p>\n

During the online event, the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban<\/strong>, thanked the director of the institute for the opportunity to participate in this important meeting for Chisinau and its citizens. “Lifelong learning is a necessity, and in this sense we want to become an example city,”<\/em> Ceban said.<\/p>\n

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities is an international policy-oriented network that provides inspiration, knowledge and good practice. Its members benefit from sharing lifelong learning policies and practices, producing and sharing knowledge on key challenges and solutions, capacity-building and training initiatives, and participation in global events, such as the International Conference of Cities learn.<\/p>\n

Based on the network’s strategy for 2019-2021, member cities focus their joint activities on seven key groups: education for sustainable development; equity and inclusion; educational planning, monitoring and evaluation; education for global citizenship; entrepreneurship; health and well-being; and literacy, according to the UIL information.<\/p>\n
