On September 22, 3 Members of the European Parliament, namely Siegfried Muresan<\/strong>, Head of EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, together with Andrius Kubilius<\/strong>, Chair of the European Parliament\u2019s Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, and Euronest Vice-Chair Andrzej Halicki<\/strong> made a statement<\/a>, following recent actions of the socialist government that “undermine the integrity of the electoral process.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are closely following how the PSRM\u2019s recent changes undermine the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the presidential elections on 1 November 2020 and this is of great concern for us. President Dodon\u2019s party has no shame or scruples in bending and adapting any electoral rule only to serve another win to its candidate,”<\/span><\/em> is said in the statement.<\/p>\n

MEPs are worried that the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) is also obeying socialists’ orders, qualifying as unacceptable that the institution, which is supposed to be independent, “is trying to change the campaign financing rules just a few weeks before the elections by banning the use of financial donations to political parties by the candidates of the same parties. This not only poses a significant danger to have free and fair competition between candidates but also considerably undermines the chance for all the candidates to conduct a free and fair campaign.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The European officials are also aware of falsified pre-registration applications for opening polling stations in the Russian Federation and the probable vote-buying schemes that involve Transnistrian residents.<\/p>\n

“With more than a month ahead of the presidential elections, the CEC must abide by the rules and ensure for all candidates, not just for the governing elite, a free and fair election campaign. In cooperation with all international bodies, OSCE, Council of Europe and the European Union, we will closely monitor the integrity of the electoral campaign in Moldova. Any manipulation or deviation from democratic standards will result in a strong condemnation and a revision of the EU-Moldova relations.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dragos Tudorache<\/strong>, the European Parliament AFET Committee Rapporteur on Moldova, claimed that Chisinau authorities must demonstrate that a fair election process can be conducted, where the right of citizens to decide their future is fully respected. “We will carefully watch the development of the campaign and the voting day at the level of the European Parliament, with a single goal: the triumph of democracy and of free, unrestricted will of the electorate,”<\/em>\u00a0said<\/a> Tudorache.<\/p>\n
