Moldova is \u2068a lower-middle-income country that ranked as the\u00a082nd\u2069 richest\u00a0<\/strong>economy<\/b>\u00a0per capita out of 133 studied, according to the Atlas of Economic Complexity<\/strong> tool<\/a> developed at\u00a0Harvard\u2019s Growth Lab. In 2018, the country recorded a GDP per capita of \u2068$4 228\u2069\u2068\u2069, this figure growing, on average, by \u20684.5%\u2069 over the past five years.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Moldova\u2069 ranked \u206871st\u2069 in the\u00a0Economic Complexity Index (ECI)<\/strong> ranking, its position worsening when\u00a0compared to a decade ago (\u206958th position). The decline in the economic complexity was driven by the lack of exports’ diversification<\/span>.\u2069 According to researchers, “Moldova’s\u2069 largest goods exports are in \u2068low and moderate\u2069 complexity products, agriculture\u00a0and textiles\u2068, respectively.\u2069”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When looking at the general figures, exports from Moldova have \u2068grown by an annual average of \u20685.1%\u2069\u2069 over the past five years<\/strong>, which has \u2068outpaced overall economic growth. \u2068Non-oil exports have\u2069 \u2068grown by \u20685.2%\u2069\u2069 annually over the past five years. Moldova\u2069 exported products worth $4.72 billion\u2069 in \u20682018\u2069, while imports amounted $7.09 billion, that meaning a \u2068trade deficit in goods and services.\u00a0The most significant shares in the total export value of the country are represented by such segments as transport, travel and tourism, as well as ICT.<\/div>\n

Moreover, there is a\u2068 promising pattern of export growth, as the report states, with the largest contribution from electrical machinery and equipment, as well as\u00a0travel and tourism\u00a0products. Generally,\u00a0export growth in \u2068Moldova’s services has been driven by expanding its global market share.<\/p>\n

The country also reached economic growth by exporting new products – \u206823\u2069\u00a0new products\u00a0were exported since \u20682003<\/strong>\u2069, contributing $\u206843\u2069 in income per capita in \u20682018\u2069. \u2068\u2068“Moldova\u2069 has diversified into a sufficient number of new products but at too small a volume to contribute to substantial income growth,”<\/em> researchers said.<\/p>\n

Given its current exports, there were identified some of the sectors with high potential for new diversification – industrial machinery\u00a0and articles of iron or steel.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
