Just a few hours ago, a petition\u00a0concerning the lack of a real prosecution in the criminal case of Turkish teachers’ expulsion was started online.<\/a> It is addressed to the EU Member States, USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, Ukraine and Georgia, asking the governments of these countries to issue a permanent ban on travel, identify and arrest property and prohibit any business and private dealings with the individuals responsible for the expulsion of Turkish teachers who never managed to be held accountable by the Moldovan judiciary.<\/p>\n

Civil society was outraged after Prosecutor General,\u00a0Alexandru Stoianoglo,\u00a0<\/strong>publicly presented wrong information regarding the judgement issued on the only criminal case filed against the former director of the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS), Vasile Botnari.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Prosecutor General announced<\/a> in a TV show, on September 7, that Vasile Botnari was sentenced, about a month ago, to an unnamed term in prison with a stay of execution. The official also stated that Botnari has already paid 125 000 euros that were lost by the Republic of Moldova to the ECtHR, as well as 380 thousand lei for the plane used for the Turkish teachers transportation.<\/p>\n

However, the statement of the PG was contradicted by the anonymously\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0court decision, according to which Vasile Botnari was actually obliged to pay only a fine of 88 000 lei.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same thing was revealed<\/a> by the MP Sergiu Litvinenco<\/strong>, just before the decision was made public. “It seems that Vasile Botnari wasn’t even sentenced to suspended imprisonment, as the Office of the Prosecutor General claimed. He was forced to pay a fine (!) for kidnapping and deporting 7 innocent people. […] Prosecutors, who had initially asked for two years in prison, did not even challenge the decision. […] I’ve never heard in my entire life of totally secret sentences. Even if the text is secret, the operative part is always public, especially in cases like this – when the families and society needs to know who sentenced the Turkish teachers to life imprisonment,”<\/em> said Litvinenco.<\/p>\n

“We need explanations from the General Prosecutor. Why did he lie to the public?”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“The Moldovan national authorities were unwilling to properly investigate this crime. A criminal case reluctantly initiated in this regard ended up classified as secret by the Office of the Prosecutor General and no significant details were made public thereafter. Former head of Moldovan Security Service Vasile Botnari remained free and unpunished. Other involved individuals were cleared by the Prosecutor\u2019s Office of the charges. Thus, the Moldovan authorities did everything possible to cover-up this crime and effectively not punish anyone for committing it,”<\/em> <\/span>is mentioned in the petition launched today.<\/p>\n

The petition requirements target the illegal and unpunished activity of\u00a0Vasile Botnari<\/strong>, former head of the Moldovan Security and Intelligence Service who coordinated the entire operation, Andrian Candu<\/strong>, former chair of the Moldovan Parliament who failed to oversee the operation and investigate the crime, as the SIS is under the formal authority and supervision of the Parliament, Olga Poalelungi<\/strong>, former head of the Moldovan Bureau of Migration and Asylum who issued post-factum supporting documentation,\u00a0Pavel Filip<\/strong>, former prime-minister of the Moldovan Government, under whose authority operated the Moldovan Bureau of Migration and Asylum,\u00a0Alexandr Stoianoglo<\/strong>, the Moldovan Prosecutor General who did not bring to justice all those who were involved, and did not request\u00a0the adequate punishment for the perpetrator(s).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The deceitful declaration of the Prosecutor General raised another red flag regarding the independence and transparency of the Moldovan Judiciary. The Moldovan society can’t trust it anymore. So the governments of other states are asked to “deliver some justice to the victims of this grave crime and re-establish the trust of people in human rights and the role of the international and European community in protecting them.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“If not designated by you, these wrongdoers will be free to come to your countries, do business and deal with your people as usual, as if nothing happened. This will be a true betrayal of the seven humans, Turkish teachers, and of the ideals of human rights and rule of law, said to be the cornerstones of the European continent and international global order,” <\/em>is also said in the text of the petition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
