Head of the National Agency for Public Health (NAPH), Nicolae Furtuna,<\/strong> announced his resignation today, after a consultation meeting with Prime Minister Ion Chicu<\/strong>, as being reported in a note<\/a> of the Government of the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n

Nicolae Furtuna was involved in a big scandal after his recent statement related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence, he was asked to resign by several former healthcare dignitaries, but also by several political leaders.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to be criticised and I don’t want to seem cynical, but all over the world, COVID-19 took the life of those who were still a burden to themselves and to those around them, people who were struggling in terminal stages of cancer, advanced diabetes, irreversible cardiovascular diseases. This happened in France, Italy and, unfortunately, also in the Republic of Moldova,”<\/em> claimed Nicolae Furtuna yesterday in a TV show<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The official also informed that\u00a099% of patients who died had a comorbidity, and over 70% even two.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In response to his declarations, several politicians demanded the resignation of the chief epidemiologist, perceiving his words as a direct\u00a0insult to all people affected by the virus.\u00a0“The recent statement of the head of NAPH demonstrates how much cynicism and insensitivity this government can show when it comes to people and their health. The resignation of this person is the only way by which the offence brought to all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, especially to those who suffered because of COVID-19, can be recognized and fully assumed,”<\/em> said<\/a> the leader of the Dignity and Truth Platform Party, Andrei N\u0103stase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Similar statements were made<\/a> by the leaders of other parliamentary parties. President Igor Dodon<\/strong> demanded\u00a0the resignation of Furtuna, stating that public apologies are not enough. “I know that he worked hard in this very complicated pandemic period, but the completely inadequate statement he made seriously affected his credibility for his further activity. I consider that after this statement he no longer has the moral quality to hold the position of the NAPH director and must resign<\/span>,”<\/em> stated<\/a> Igor Dodon on social media.<\/p>\n

Such declarations made by the president or the prime minister sound very incompetent though, taking into consideration that their recent actions demanded their own resignation, which,\u00a0by the way, they didn’t announce. On the contrary, these officials pretended that nothing illegal, immoral or inappropriate happened, that they did nothing wrong.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Ion Chicu was involved in a scandal after illegally organising a wedding for his son and the actions of President Igor Dodon became the subject of discussions\u00a0after he\u00a0 returned from abroad a few times and didn’t take any self-isolation measures, as it is legally required.<\/p>\n

Nicolae Furtuna publicly apologised<\/a> in a press release for his statements, mentioning that he used the word “burden”<\/em> as a medical term. Later on, his resignation was announced in the note of the Government by Ion Chicu.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection of Moldova\u00a0lately\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0a number of 40 556<\/strong> confirmed cases and 1 087<\/strong> deaths\u00a0as a result of coronavirus infection.<\/p>\n
