Travel agencies, accommodation, catering and agreement units have been hit hard by the pandemic crisis.\u00a0According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) <a href=\"https:\/\/statistica.gov.md\/newsview.php?l=ro&amp;idc=168&amp;id=6736\">data<\/a>, from January to June 2020, travel agencies from Moldova provided services to only <strong>37.5 thousand<\/strong> tourists &#8211; that being\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">75.3% less <\/span>than in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The accommodation units from Moldova welcomed <strong>41.3 thousand<\/strong> tourists in the same period, that being\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">73,6% less <\/span>as compared to the same period of the last year, as the same source <a href=\"https:\/\/statistica.gov.md\/newsview.php?l=ro&amp;idc=168&amp;id=6733\">informed<\/a>.\u00a0Only 6.7 thousand foreign tourists used the services of Moldovan travel agencies and 19.1 thousand tourists from abroad were accommodated in Moldovan hotels, camping or guesthouses between January and June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, while having the borders closed due to the pandemic conditions and not much support from state authorities, inbound tourism is the last hope of businesses now more that ever. Luckily, there are national campaigns initiated, such as<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/neampornit\">#NeamPornit<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(tr. as we set off), to promote and support inbound tourism and motivate locals to discover their own country. New touristic trails, routes, <a href=\"https:\/\/neampornit.map.md\/#participate\">interactive maps<\/a>\u00a0 are developed. Unusual touristic attractions, picturesque viewpoints, traditional places to stay and eat are (re)discovered.<\/p>\n<p>People from Moldova learned that they have no other choice than to explore their own country this summer. Tourism businesses learned that they have no other choice than to adapt to the requests and preferences of their local clients.<\/p>\n<h3>What do tourists from Moldova want?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Magenta Consulting<\/strong> has conducted a national study on the perception of Moldovans towards local tourism. The <a href=\"https:\/\/consulting.md\/rom\/statistici-si-publicatii\/cine-este-turistul-moldovean\">study<\/a> revealed that\u00a0 Moldovan tourists are divided almost equally into those who seek safety and those who prefer more adventure (<strong>Cohen&#8217;s Classification<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">42% of tourists were classified as <em>explorers<\/em> &#8211; people who organise their own vacation, look for unusual destinations, but emphasise the comfort of accommodation, tending to take part in the lives of locals while getting out of their usual environment;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">26% of tourists are characterised as being\u00a0<em>organised<\/em> &#8211; they prefer to use the services of travel agencies and make no decisions on their own as the itinerary, accommodation and food are already planned;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">14% of them are <em>individuals<\/em> &#8211; these people tend to involve more in organising their trip, even though it can be planned by a travel agency as well;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">6% of participants turned out to be <em>drifters<\/em> &#8211; those who\u00a0do not have a planned itinerary in advance, are flexible and do not give priority to comfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When taking into consideration\u00a0<strong>Plog&#8217;s Model<\/strong>, 27% of Moldovan tourists seem to be <em>psychocentric<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0 they are conservative, restrained in activities and less adventurous. Such tourists prioritise comfort and safety, preferring typical amenities for tourists. 26% of tourists are, on the contrary, <em>allocentric<\/em> -they look for new experiences and adventures, opt for unusual things and like to meet and talk to strangers. The <em>mid-centric<\/em> tourists (47%) combine characteristics from both previous types.<\/p>\n<p>Local travellers <a href=\"https:\/\/consulting.md\/rom\/statistici-si-publicatii\/ce-si-doresc-turistii-moldoveni\">prefer<\/a> active tourism &#8211; 64%, while only 36% would opt for passive tourism. At the same time, a big share of Moldovan tourists\u00a0visit relatives or family (34%), followed by those who prefer cultural tourism (32%), nature walks (30%), but also relaxation or health activities (26%).<\/p>\n<p>The biggest impediments perceived by potential tourists are high prices &#8211; 43%, lack of knowledge regarding new touristic attractions in the country &#8211; 31%, no car (15%), or no commodities for families with little kids (11%).<\/p>\n<p>Basically, when all these needs are satisfied and all these (and other) aspects are taken into consideration, local businesses can expect a higher number of\u00a0 local tourists asking for their services.<\/p>\n<h3>What can the tourism industry offer?<\/h3>\n<p>Some businesses that are part of the Moldovan tourism industry seem to be more creative and motivated to attract tourists in this crisis. Generally speaking, with an emerging tourism sector this could mean a higher market share in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>New kayaking, hiking and cycling routes are now developed from the scratch, traditional guesthouses are built or restored from old traditional houses, while offering delicious food and authentic rooms for sleeping, lakes are designed for fishing, local craftsmen are welcoming tourists for having an insight into their art workshops, campsites are placed on the river banks or next to forests,\u00a0trips to caves, mansions, wineries,\u00a0protected areas with unique flora and fauna are offered. All of it already exists in Moldova. It waits to be explored by the local and foreign tourists for many seasons ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows, maybe this crisis could be the proper moment for the Moldovan tourism to really start to reinvent
