According to the official data<\/a> presented by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS)<\/strong>, a citizen of the Republic of Moldova earned on average\u00a07633.9 lei<\/strong> per month or about 390 euro (gross amount) at the beginning of 2020.<\/p>\n

Moldova is the country with one of the lowest<\/a> guaranteed minimum wage in Europe –\u00a02935 lei<\/strong> per month (about 150 euro) and, at the same time, the country where\u00a02 515 people obtained incomes higher than one million lei in 2019<\/span> (as compared to 2018 – 1760 persons), as\u00a0the State Fiscal Service reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A survey<\/a> on lifestyle and financial views of middle and upper-middle class from 6 post-Soviet countries, prepared for Noblet Media CIS by Info Sapiens Research Agency<\/strong>, revealed that 49% of respondents have a monthly income less than 300 euro. On the other hand, 13% said they earn more than 1000 euro per month.<\/p>\n

When asked about their priorities, 61% of respondents say they are mostly focused on improving economic well-being, while 24% aim to achieve personal popularity or a higher status.<\/p>\n

For almost a third of questioned Moldovans (32%), working as a part of a global private company represents the dream job, while 17% of them would like to work as a part of local private company and the same share would move to a job in the non-governmental sector at the local level. Only 13% of respondents said they dream to start their own business. Why is that? Maybe because 48% of respondents answered they would like to make as few decisions as possible at work.<\/p>\n

The NBS says<\/a> that half of the Moldovan population (50.2%<\/span>) have salaries as the main source of income. 18.7% of the population earn from social benefits. 15.2% of Moldovan people are self-employed and 12.5% pinned their hope on money transfers from abroad.<\/p>\n

When talking about where this money is spent, the biggest part of expenditures is food consumption (40.6%<\/span>).<\/p>\n

16.2% of the total household budget is directed to the house maintainence, 9.7% to expenditures for clothing and footwear, 6.1% to transport services, 5.2% to health services, 5.1% to housing equipment and 4.5% to communication services. Leisure, cultural activities or travelling are not even listed as a separate expenditure category in the case of Moldovans.<\/p>\n

\n

People from Moldova belonging to middle class prefer to spend their money on clothes, footwear and personal care (30%), as well as on meeting with friends and entertainment (29%), beside food and utility costs. In the meantime, 53% of respondents said they aim at more conscious consumption.<\/p>\n

66%<\/span> of people who live in Moldova have their own accommodation, 20% rent one, while 18% of them live with parents or other relatives\/ friends, as the\u00a0survey<\/a> on lifestyle and financial views of middle and upper-middle class demonstrated. Moreover, 36%<\/span> of Moldovans who answered the survey believe that acquiring real estate is the best way to manage their savings.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan middle class is scattered, as it only slowly emerges from the majority of the population that has a low level of income. Sometimes,\u00a0it is undecided, uneducated regarding personal finance management and too much focused on material things. Still, things can change\u00a0with the new generations.<\/p>\n
