On July 31, Peter Michalko<\/strong>, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, expressed<\/a> his perplexity regarding the trial continuous postponements in the criminal case filed against Ilan Shor while being invited to a TV show. “How long can we see the permanent postponements in \u0218or’s trial? These delays do not strengthen the trust in the judiciary and the efficiency of the law enforcement agencies,”<\/em> he said. In the end, no one was punished in the case regarding the bank fraud scandal, Peter Michalko also mentioned.<\/p>\n

As a consequence, several representatives of the “Shor” Party organised a protest at the headquarters of the diplomatic mission on August 6, accusing the EU diplomat of interfering with the process of justice.\u00a0“It is not good for a diplomat to express his opinion on TV regarding the way the Shor case is examined. His statements may suggest to the magistrates to convict Ilan Shor in a controversial case,”<\/em> claimed the political party members and supporters.\u00a0According to protesters, Peter<\/span>\u00a0Michalko should resign or be recalled from office.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, Peter Michalko declarations provoked further reactions among the diplomats established in Chisinau.\u00a0The Ambassador of France to the Republic of Moldova,\u00a0Pascal Le Deunff,<\/strong> declared his\u00a0“full solidarity”<\/em> with the statements of the head of the EU Delegation to Moldova. “Moldova has committed to the EU to ensure that fair and impartial judicial proceedings concerning the bank fraud from 2014-2015. […] France is attached to honouring this commitment,”<\/em> is mentioned in a message<\/a> of the diplomatic mission.<\/p>\n

Ilan Shor was sentenced in 2017 to seven years and six months in prison for fraud and money laundering, but the court of first instance ordered that the sentence come into force only after it becomes final. The case is being examined at the Cahul Court of Appeal, where the hearings have been postponed more than 30 times (!). The next meeting is scheduled for the beginning of September.<\/p>\n

The former politician left the country illegally last year, staying in Israel for the moment, according to the Interpol information.<\/p>\n
