These days, information about the criminal case filed against Larisa Calic<\/strong>, a Moldovan citizen living in the Transnistrian region, was announced in the media. The girl\u00a0is suspected of public incitement to extremism<\/span> after publishing a documentary book<\/span> about the Transnistrian army, as NewsMaker wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Larisa Calic launched a series of anonymous interviews with former soldiers of the Transnistrian army at the end of 2019. Afterwards, she published a book, using her real name and, as a consequence, she came under the scrutiny of the Transnistrian Ministry of State Security.<\/span> Recently, Calic found out that a preliminary investigation for extremism had been opened, while the Transnistrian special services interrogated the heroes of her interviews as witnesses.<\/p>\n

After sending an official inquiry letter to the Transnistrian authorities, namely to the\u00a0leader of Transnistria (Vadim Krasnoselski), Larisa received, on June 9, a confirmation\u00a0from the Transnistrian military prosecutor’s office – a criminal case has been filed against her for “public exhortations to extremist activities through the use of the press and internet.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Larisa Calic risks to be fined approximately 2 000- 2 500 euros or to be imprisoned for a period from 3 to 5 years, without the right to hold certain positions or to perform certain activities for a period of up to 3 years.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, Larisa Calic is living abroad, as she fears for her own security.<\/p>\n

On June 9, Alexandr Samonii<\/strong>, an opposition deputy of the city council and a member of the Communist Party of Transnistria, has been declared wanted. He was accused of public incitement to extremism through anonymous posts on Facebook<\/span> where he would have been allegedly urged “social hostility and intolerance”<\/em> and insulted the local leader, Vadim Krasnoselski, informed<\/a> the same media portal.<\/p>\n

“During the pandemic crisis, there was a decline in the human rights situation in the Transnistrian region, and the negative consequences\u00a0 aggravate some problems ignored and unresolved over many years,”<\/em><\/span> is mentioned in a Promo-LEX Report<\/a> on Situation of Human Rights Compliance in the Transnistrian Region During the COVID-19 Crisis. The report particularly referred to the lack of an effective dialogue between the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria regarding such issues as freedom of movement (blocking the administrative border), transportation problems, functioning of Transnistrian schools with teaching in Romanian, as well as limited access to fair justice, medical care and banking services of the Moldovan citizens living on the left bank of the Dniester.<\/p>\n

“In addition, attacks on freedom of expression, decisions contrary to the protection of personal data, abusive deprivation of liberty during this period are measures that only reinforce the findings regarding the inability of the Transnistrian officials to prevent violations of human rights. Continuing the inappropriate behaviour, the administration of\u00a0Tiraspol repeatedly refused to participate in the meetings of working groups (human rights or health), which are so necessary in periods of crisis,”<\/em><\/span> is also mentioned in the report.<\/p>\n

The Promo-LEX report highlighted that, all in all, more than 37 illegally installed border checkpoints and barriers were documented in the Security Zone<\/span>\u00a0(a buffer area between Moldova and Transnistria).<\/p>\n

“Too much attention is paid to political and diplomatic issues, while it is too easy to overlook issues related to the violation of fundamental human rights in the Transnistrian region, especially in the security zone. The population on the left bank of the Dniester River distrusts the efficiency of the negotiations and the actions of the stakeholders involved in the process of settling the Transnistrian problem. The voice of the locals from the Transnistrian region is not heard and their problems have not been solved for years. Despite various programs and measures to increase the confidence, the effect is the opposite,”<\/em> said<\/a> Ion Manole<\/strong>,\u00a0Executive Director of Promo-LEX.<\/p>\n
