An electric vehicle charging infrastructure was started in Moldova thanks to a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)<\/strong>,\u00a0the Government of the Republic Moldova <\/strong>and a few private companies. As a result, 22 electric vehicle charging stations<\/span> were installed on the main urban routes and were tested free of charge during 1-15 May 2020.<\/p>\n

The development project was implemented by a private company<\/a>, in charge for the complete cycle of installation and maintenance of electric car refuelling stations, from design to commissioning. The total cost of the project amounted to $292 000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The charging stations were\u00a0located<\/a> in the gas stations’ parking lots of a partner company in 17 localities all over the country.<\/p>\n

The project also includes 8 electric car refuelling stations completed by the end of May and 30 stations to be installed in June-August.\u00a0By the end of the year, their number will reach a total of 60 units<\/span>, along the routes connecting Romania to Ukraine, assuring the possibility of\u00a0 transiting the country by electric cars, according to a press release<\/a> of the UN Moldova.<\/p>\n

The maximum power of a three-phase station is 44 kW<\/strong>, while 80% charging is met in about one hour. The equipment is compatible with all types of electric vehicles and allows for the simultaneous supply of two cars.<\/p>\n

The initiative is part of the “Moldova Sustainable Green Cities”<\/em> project (2018-2022) funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNDP Moldova, aiming to catalyse investments in green development with low carbon, applying integrated urban planning approaches, encouraging innovation, participatory planning, and public-private partnerships.<\/p>\n

Additionally, a few multinational retailing company that operate in Moldova also got involved in the initiative of extending the network of electric vehicle charging stations and installed their own electric charging stations<\/span> in the parking lots of their stores. Therefore, customers and visitors can benefit from free recharging. Each station usually has two chargers, serving two cars simultaneously at a capacity of 22 kW<\/strong> each.<\/p>\n

With the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the number of electric vehicles also increased in Moldova.\u00a0Thus, whereas at the end of 2018, there were 99 electric cars registered in Moldova, in October 2019, their number reached a total of 222 electric cars<\/span>. Only in the first 9 months of 2019 the number of electric cars registered in Moldova has more than doubled, said<\/a> the portal piataauto.md.<\/p>\n

Taking into consideration that the network of electric vehicle chargers extended in 2020 and still is planned to be developed, it is also expected that the number of electric car holders will increase even more in the future.<\/p>\n
