Several district hospitals and medical centres of the Moldovan districts located next to the Transnistrian region experienced a shortage of medical staff. About 100 doctors and medical workers announced the Bureau for Reintegration Policies of Moldova<\/strong> that they cannot go to work because Tiraspol declared a state of emergency since one month.<\/p>\n

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, doctors from the Transnistrian region who work in the Moldovan hospitals are obliged to comply with the quarantine regime of 14 days, if they go to work in the medical institutions located on the other bank of the Dniester River, as\u00a0anticoruptie.md\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the administration of medical institutions, Tiraspol motivated its decision by the fact that the doctors represent a vulnerable category for contracting the virus and their free movement would increase the risk of the Transnistrian population contagion.<\/p>\n

“I tried to solve the problem with the Bureau for Reintegration Policies of Moldova. Doctors are allowed to cross the border, but they would have to remain in Moldova. We need a doctor to stay here permanently, the rest of them have children, sick parents. They cannot stay,”<\/em> the head of the district hospital from Rezina told anticoruptie.md.<\/p>\n

At the same time, there are medical workers that were blocked on the Moldovan side and remained there to work, without seeing their families, until the end of the quarantine regime.<\/p>\n

“The doctors from Dubasari advise the patients on the telephone, they supervise by telephone the persons returned from abroad. But when it comes to more serious cases, there is a single family doctor for almost 5 000 inhabitants. She is over 60 years old. She tries provide medical care to everyone and works a lot overtime,”<\/em> Raisa Spinovschi, the mayor of a village from the Dubasari district specified.<\/p>\n

According to the managing director of the Promo-LEX Association, Ion Manole, the doctors from Dub\u0103sari district (Transnistria) who work in Criuleni district (Moldova) were quarantined for 14 days and, when tried to return to work, were quarantined again.\u00a0“On April 15, they were no longer allowed to leave Dubasari to Criuleni for work, being quarantined again for 14 days. When they claimed they would stay in Criuleni until the end of the pandemic period, they were blamed for not being patriots of their Transnistrian homeland as true patriots must serve their homeland in such times,”<\/span><\/em> Ion Manole stated.<\/p>\n

Promo-LEX Association declared in an official statement that “while in the civilised world, medical professionals are appreciated, helped and honoured for their efforts, in the Transnistrian region, the doctors are harassed, intimidated and condemned because they want to continue their work during the pandemic.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The association’s lawyers qualified the measures taken by the Tiraspol authorities as unreasonable and unjustified. “The artificial and unjustified obstacles to the activity of medical personnel during the epidemiological crisis represent a gesture of defying the efforts of preventing the spread of the virus and fighting against the pandemic,”<\/em><\/span> Promo-LEX jurists stated in the press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the separatist authorities continue the messages in which they accused the Moldovan authorities of hypocrisy.<\/p>\n

“In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Moldovan authorities continue to escalate relations with Transnistria, in fact, triggering an information warfare. This is proved by regular provocative attacks and pressure measures carried out in various fields. Moreover, the government from Chisinau cynically disguises its diplomatic and bureaucratic frauds as caring for Transnistrian people. […] Instead of focusing their efforts on fighting against the coronavirus pandemic, the Moldovan authorities build a network of political intrigues against Transnistria, a trap in which they seem to fall themselves,”<\/em> stated a new article<\/a> published by the separatist media institution PMR Novosti.<\/p>\n

Several NGOs (IDIS “Viitorul”, Association for Foreign Policy, Investigative Journalism Centre, Transparency International Moldova, Institute of Public Policies, Promo-LEX Association, Institute for European Policies and Reforms, Amnesty International Moldova and WatchDog.MD Community)\u00a0asked<\/a> the mediators and observers of the 5+2 negotiation format to take all necessary\u00a0measures to determine the Moldovan and Transnistrian parts to cease any human rights violation in the region, especially in the context of the novel coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n
