A solidarity march was organised\u00a0by several NGOs at Chi\u0219in\u0103u today. Such events are organised all over the globe on International Women’s Day. People\u00a0advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. So let’s talk about the gender gap in Moldova and see what are the realities that describe it.<\/p>\n

Moldova ranked 23rd<\/strong> out of 153 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index<\/span><\/strong>, having a score of 0.757. The Global Gender Gap Report<\/a> 2020 showed that\u00a0the Republic of Moldova offers equal opportunities when it comes to access to health and education. However, in such aspects as political empowerment and equal professional opportunities the equal rights are not so equal anymore.<\/p>\n

For example, only 25.7% of MPs in Moldova are represented by women (as compared to 74.3% who are represented by men),\u00a0 whereas 40.5% of legislators, senior officials and managers are represented by women ( 59.5% are men).<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

According to the data<\/a> presented by Central Election Commission, with the support of UNDP Moldova,\u00a0more than 24 thousand women were registered in the local elections last autumn as candidates for mayor or local councillor.\u00a0That means 44% of the total registered electoral competitors were women.<\/span><\/p>\n

After announcing the elections results, a number of 196 women became mayors, which represented 22% of the total number of elected mayors.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

As compared to the 2015 elections, the number of elected women mayors went up by\u00a01%, whereas as compared to the 2011 and 2007 elections, there was an increase of almost 4%.<\/p>\n

The share of women entrepreneurs is at 33.9% (2017), with women who wish to start their own business facing many barriers,<\/strong><\/span><\/em> stated<\/a> UNDP Moldova.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, Moldova is among the countries with relatively low differences in income between genders. The Global Gender Gap Report stated that, the country has closed 74.9%<\/strong> of its gender pay gap, along with Slovenia (80.9%) and Lithuania (76.3%).<\/p>\n

Still, the biggest issues related to the gender gap in Moldova are related to patriarchal attitudes in families that limit educational choices and employment options for women, mostly unrecorded and undeclared discriminatory practices, unequal sharing of work and family responsibilities and stigmas of being weak or dependant on men.<\/p>\n

According to the study<\/a> “Men and gender equality in the Republic of Moldova”<\/em> conducted by Women\u2019s Law Center\u00a0 and Center for Investigation and Consultation \u201cSocioPolis\u201d, cooking, cleaning and laundry are only seldom performed by men.<\/p>\n

5.9% of fathers declared that they were never involved in childcare, 18.9% – in cooking, 29.6% – in cleaning and 44.9% – in laundry.\u00a0\u00a090,5% of men and 81,5% of women believe that for a woman the most important thing is to take care of the house and cook for her family.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s take the message of one of the most important men in the country – Prime Minister Ion Chicu and see what are his main points when congratulating women on International Women’s Day. Not a word about women’s rights:\u00a0the right to vote, to studies, to work, to property, to social protection, to equal functions and wages. It’s like this day celebrates the women ability of giving birth, being patient and wise with all bad-mannered men, especially with those in power.<\/p>\n

An even worse phenomenon is the gender-based violence, which is still widespread in the country, while efficient mechanisms for combating and preventing domestic violence and systems for providing effective remedies to victims are lacking, as UNDP Moldova reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One in four women aged 15 years or older experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner over the last 12 months.\u00a0<\/strong>13 women were killed by one family member, and another 22 women lost their lives as a result of traumas caused by their partners since 2018,\u00a0<\/strong>as NGOs\u00a0official data<\/a>\u00a0revealed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The study<\/a>\u00a0“Violence against Women in the Family”\u00a0<\/em>conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, found that 63%<\/strong> of women experienced psychological, physical or sexual violence from their husband or partner and one in 10 experienced economic violence at least once. Rural, elderly and separated or divorced women had the highest rates of multiple types of violence.<\/p>\n

It’s true that Moldova has made international and national commitments to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women, when ratifying the Convention\u00a0on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)<\/strong> and adopting the Law on Equality of Opportunities for Men and Women<\/strong>, as well as a series of national strategies and action plans.<\/p>\n

Still, when it comes to more concrete things such as\u00a0Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence<\/strong>\u00a0(Istanbul Convention), Moldovan politicians are really reluctant, as it\u00a0has not been ratified until today.<\/p>\n

Finally, Moldovan people don’t really understand why they do need gender equality, their common mentality being still influenced by Soviet ideas regarding a ‘correct’<\/em> role of women in the family, job and society. Just think about it:<\/p>\n

43% of men and 33,8% of women believe that by giving rights to women means that men are at loss.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
