Chisinau, February 13, 2020<\/strong> – The Parliament voted, in the second reading, a bill complementing the Contravention Code that provides for applying fines to all individuals and legal entities that will be\u00a0using and selling plastic bags and plastic dishes in Moldova, as an official press release<\/a> of the Parliament informed.<\/p>\n

According to the voted bill, penalties will be up to 4 500<\/strong> lei for individuals and up to 12 000<\/strong> lei for legal entities, being applied from January 1, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The provisions refer to the use and sale of transport bags made of plastic<\/em>, with or without handle, with thickness equal to or greater than 50 microns, provided to consumers at grocery stores or any kind of shops; thin plastic bags<\/em> with a wall thickness of less than 50 microns, except those used as packaging; and very thin plastic bags<\/em>, with wall thicknesses less than 15 microns, except those used as packaging.<\/p>\n

The penalties will also be applied to the use and selling of dishes, glasses, disposable straws\u00a0<\/em>made out of plastic, except the biodegradable ones.<\/p>\n

“The initiative is a step forward towards the developed states’ approach that are aware of the danger represented by the disposable plastic products for the environment, states that make joint efforts through policies and regulations, to eliminate them. It is important for the Republic of Moldova, both at the state level and at the level of each citizen, to raise awareness of the need to change some habits and practices, in order to ensure sustainable economic development, with minimal impact on the environment,\u201d<\/em> <\/span>is mentioned in the legislative initiative.<\/p>\n

“These products, as they are not recycled, pollute soils and water for decades after only one use. They must be eliminated from the economical circuit through a collective effort. It also implies a change of habits of each of us. We have to discard them because the air and water is more important,\u02ee<\/em> said<\/a> the MP Dumitru Alaiba.<\/p>\n

Previously, the Parliament has approved several legislative amendments to the law providing for gradually prohibiting the use and selling of plastic bags starting from January 1, 2019, and their banning starting from January 1, 2021. However, the law was heavily criticised by the public and experts, as it earlier didn’t include specific penalty measures.<\/p>\n
