After the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu paid a visit to Brussels, on September 30th<\/sup>, and had a discussion with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, Federica Mogherini came today to Chi\u0219in\u0103u.<\/p>\n

Prime minister Maia Sandu and Federica Mogherini held a press conference<\/a> at the Government of the Republic of Moldova, making several important statements regarding the future of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.<\/p>\n

Maia Sandu claimed that the visit of such a high-ranking EU official to Chi\u0219in\u0103u is a proof that the Government has succeeded in “turning the Republic of Moldova back to the European Union”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to her declarations, during the common meeting, the objectives and challenges in the context of the Government’s reform agenda were discussed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received assurances that the European Union will continue to be on our side, on the side of citizens, on the side of justice.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prime minister mentioned also the importance of the Association Agreement for the Republic of Moldova. \u201cThe Association Agreement with the European Union is not just a collaboration agreement, based on which support is given. It is a document of internal policies, of reforms for the Republic of Moldova. […] We need the association agreement, first of all, because the measures that are included there will lead to the improvement of the living standards of our citizens. […] We know that we can count on EU support only if we strictly respect our commitments and we are determined to do so,\u201d<\/strong> claimed Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

At the same time,\u00a0the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Federica Mogherini specified the meaning of her visit to\u00a0Chi\u0219in\u0103u. \u201cMy visit today is, first of all, a clear sign of the importance we attach to our partnership, but even more important, it is a sign of the renewed engagement between the EU and the Republic of Moldova,\u201d<\/strong> she said.<\/p>\n

The EU representative claimed that\u00a0positive changes in the country have been observed by the EU: \u201c3 months can be a very long or a very short period of time but what is important is that the right things started to be put in place,\u201d<\/strong> claimed Federica Mogherini.\u00a0 Furthermore, the continuation of reforms is necessary.<\/p>\n

“We believe that it is crucial to strengthen the independence of the state institutions, in order to restore public confidence. […] Continuing reforms is essential to get the most out of the Association Agreement.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the EU official, 36 million euros will be granted, that representing budget support for Moldova. In this regard, 14 million euros will be awarded in October, and 22 million euros in November this year. “We resumed the budget support payments in July, we mobilised high-level experts to give technical support to the Government in the strategic areas of justice reform, anti-money laundering and energy. We signed financing agreement worth 40 million euros for 3 new programs which focus on local development, anti-corruption, fight against gender violence and the Erasmus program,<\/strong>” specified Federica Mogherini.<\/p>\n

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security expressed her hope that, in the coming weeks, the first tranche of the macro-financial assistance will be unlocked. “Our financial support will remain conditioned by the progress of the reforms. At the same time, we will offer financial assistance, counselling and technical assistance. We are ready to support you even more than before,\u201d<\/strong> added the EU official.<\/p>\n
